we need an 2011 like surge in free agency. It can be done. Brooks and Jones who played guard in 2014 are all gone because they didn't fit the new england power scheme. Contrary to popular belief, one or two of the lower rounders will eventually become pro bowlers. The question is will they do it for an afc rival?

in the same token, bouye, brooks and Keenum will all make the probowl some even all pro consideration this season.. doh!

Maybe Texans players know the secret to big contracts from ricky smits: Just get injured the year before your contract is up and presto, new contract. Hey Matt Schaub, just coming off Lisfranc injury? "Heres a brand new 60mil contract before you even prove youre okay from the surgery. Its not my money and I can do no wrong in ownerships eyes".

Look....this will be the offseason where Rick Smith earns his money or paves the way for his exit. He knows he has his QB. Now, he has to fill holes without a 1st and 2nd rounder. He does have extra picks in the 3rd round to help. He will have a shitload of cap money too. He needs to work his magic with undrafted Free Agents also. Rick Smith does has an eye for talent......but he needs to be the best he has ever been this offseason.

things workout in different ways. Vikings for example gave a first rounder for Bradford because their "franchise" qb goes down. Turns out they walked into case keenum, texans pick for the kubiak system. There was this play yesterday in the closing touch for the vikings. Keenum, play action, bootlegs to the right, pin point throw to thielen for 15 yards. It looked beautiful and familiar to that kid kubes.
Guess who leads the league in play action tds? (posted by zeeshan) If you guessed Watson. You'd be correct. Guess who looked like an unstoppable forced lined up next to hopkins...fuller. Guess whose offense led the league? Watsons. Guess which organization eyed bouye, brooks, keenum, gq, ben? this nonsense i hear by sean jones and his partner that we can't find talent is bogus.

Watson is the guy everything will fall into place. You might not be ready for it but your kids will love it.*

*disregard my post if some massive earthquake happens at reliant wiping out our entire roster followed by seven plagues.

You do realize texans don’t own a 1st or 2nd round pick, right?

Cushing, Joseph, watt are done. Kevin Johnson is injury prone, no safety, offensive line is a mess.

You’re an idiot if you think this team is one jadeveon clowney away from being good.

And for what? To have the pleasure of signing another defensive player to another $100 million contract when he’s obviously not worth that kind of money.

It’s like Morey said: “The teams that find the Chandler Parsons, not the team that pays him the max, are the ones that succeed long term.”

Watt is not done. And anyone who is afraid of not having a first and second round pick shouldn't be in an NFL war room. Scouts can now spend more time on talent outside the first 2 rounds ... the 'steals of the draft'. We have our QB and that's what we should be hopeful for. Tons of talent left on this team. Need OL help and a new TE. It's time for CJ to hang it up.

Watt is not done. Cushing and Joseph are gone......frees up money. This team is probably 3 Olinemen (another being healthy), 2 CBs, and a safety away. All can be addressed in Free Agency/Draft. I think DeCoud could be the answer at Safety with a full off season (Remember, he missed all of offseason because of Stanford/PAC 12 rules). If you don't think this team can find five players in Free Agency and the draft, then you don't know football. Mancz and Martin are fine on the line (Health of Mancz has hurt this season). You fill in around them (hope Davenport develops for year 2, that could eliminate a need).

    So jealous right now...

And about to become a Browns fan.

They need to look at Alonzo Highsmith too, imo.

You don't decide to trade Clowney just because you want a 1st round pick. Clowney is legitimately a top 5 defensive player in the league. Last time I checked, you don't trade someone of his caliber.

Anyone suggesting we trade Clowney is living in fantasy-land and doesn't understand anything about how to build a football team.

I know good teams don’t give out max contracts to defensive players and bad teams like the redskins and bills over pay for guys like haynesworth and Mario Williams.

What you don’t understand is there’s this thing called the salary cap, and teams need to be efficient and smart and not use it all on one player, especially when watt is already getting paid the max and you have several other positions to adress.

I supposed you thought cowboys trading Hershel Walker for draft picks was a bad idea too.

The truth is great teams are built through the draft, not free agency.

Well I guess you don't understand that giving Clowney a contract extension doesn't magically use up the entire salary cap.

Great teams also keep their great players. If you want to "build through the draft" like any good team should do, then you also have to retain players once their initial rookie deal is expired. If you decide that you're going to trade away any promising player because you're afraid to figure out how to make the salary cap work with a few huge contracts, then you are GUARANTEED to be a perpetually rebuilding team.

The entire point of drafting in the first round is to find players that can be franchise cornerstones for the next decade. Clowney is a perfect example of a guy that should be (and will be) a franchise cornerstone for the next several seasons.

Haynesworth and Williams are extreme outliers when it comes to ill-advised contracts. What have you seen out of Clowney that makes you question whether or not he can live up to a huge extension? I, for one, haven't seen anything that would lead me to believe that.

By your logic, maybe we should also trade Deshaun in a couple of seasons so that we can "build through the draft". Oh wait, we DRAFTED Clowney. And we DRAFTED Watson. I guess you probably wanted to trade Hopkins this past offseason too, huh?

You’re missing the point, you don’t pay defensive players qb type of money, with the only exception being watt.

Of course you don’t trade Watson, he’s a superstar franchise qb. You make him the highest paid player in the league without question. Only qbs should be getting paid qb type of money.

Yes, you do want to re-sign your players once their contracts expire, but you don’t want to break the bank for them.

Look at Whitney mercilus contract. He’s one of our best pass rushers and he’s signed up for 4 years/$26 million, that’s a team friendly deal.

Of course I would like to keep clowney within a reasonable deal but he will easily break the record for highest paid defensive player and at that point, Texans are better off not signing him.

I understand what you're saying. But gauging every defensive player's contract compared to Mercilus' deal is beyond unrealistic. Mercilus signed that deal before he had his couple of breakout seasons. So if you're going to compare Clowney's contract situation to Mercilus' then you shouldn't extend Clowney even if it was for something like 5 years and $60 million.

Josh Norman, Von Miller, Ndomakung Suh and Justin Houston all have huge contracts and none of them have backfired for their respective teams. If we can agree that Clowney is a top 5 defensive player, then would you also say that the Broncos shouldn't have extended Miller? And that the Chiefs shouldn't have extended Houston (who arguably isn't even a top 5 defensive player)?

Signing Clowney to a huge deal definitely comes with risks. But at some point you have to take those kind of risks. Or else you'll find yourself trying to build a legit Super Bowl contender with moneyball tactics. And that simply won't work at all.

The risks are higher with Clowney and they're quantifiable.

One thing we know for sure -- that microfracture will fail. And we are into the time window of it failing now.

Absent that big risk, you sign him to the best deal you can get for the team, because he's playing at a high level.

But when that microfracture fails and the Texans are on the hook for >$60M in actual guarantees and >$90M in practical guarantees, the man you look to for any salary cap hell we put ourselves into is the GM. That's where the buck stops for medical issues and contracts, as well as the draft.
