Could someone answer this. Would it have been possible that when Rick traded this years 1st round pick, couldn't he have put a protected designation on it. i.e. if pick is in top 10, then the Browns do not get the pick for this year and get it next year.
It is incredible Rick will survive another 2-14/3-13 season. Bob might even give him a "Well done!" pat on the ass.
It's possible but you almost never see it in the NFL. If you trade out of the first round, not getting a return on it for possibly 2 years is an eternity.
My biggest problem is our cheap owner and cheap GM should have owned up to their mistake and paid Osweiler his remaining $16 million when we clearly had the cap space this season. Instead, we threw away a 2nd rounder, which is now going to fall somewhere in the 33-42 range -- an incredible value. No doubt, Watson was a steal in terms of what we gave up for him at the time, but now all these high picks going to Cleveland will further starve the roster of talent when we have so many needs on the offensive line and secondary.
Health solves alot of issues Healthy JJ WATT and Company would make our secondary look alot better. DeShawn will make the offense look better Rocket River
Broncos have lost 5 straight and are already thinking about firing Vance Joseph -- in his first year. Rick will hire him quicker than you can say Rahim Moore. Illinois is 0-7 under Lovie Smith in the Big 10, and he's who Rick wanted to hire over O'Brien. (Tampa Bay fired him after one year.) The Browns are 0-9 under Hue Jackson and they're going to fire him. Look for Rick to install one of those at the helm next season.
Van Joseph was a bad hire. Texans wouldnt hire him. Texans will not hire any of those coaches. Get a grip. Anyway, O’Brien isn’t going anywhere.
With no 1st or 2nd rd pick in next yrs draft it doesn't make me feel much better knowing Rick Smith's history in the 3rd rd: '07 Jacoby Jones '08 Antwaun Molden Steve Slaton '09 Antoine Caldwell '10 Earl Mitchell '11 None '12 DeVier Posey Brandon Brooks '13 Brennan Williams Sam Montgomery '14 CJ Fiedorowicz '15 Jaelen Strong '16 Braxton Miller '17 D'onta Foreman
Earl Mitchel and likely CJ and Foreman will all go down as solid picks. The switch to the 3-4 is likely why Mitchell didn’t stick. IMO, Rick Smith has clear cut value to the the organization when it comes to personnel. He knows how to get things right early in the draft and with undrafted free agents. But he also has a tendency to fail miserably outside of that. Let Smith keep his role of Director/VP or whatever it is, but bring in a real GM.
LOL.....i still don't get why people think other teams GMs have misses in every draft? Rick is great at first round picks.....the BEST in the league over a decade. The Watson pick, and the moving up, looks like GENIUS. Especially when many teams passed on him and didn't think he was a first round pick. Yes, he had his 2nd and 3rd round misses. So have other teams. Rick has a knack for undrafted and street Free Agents. Dylan Cole looks like a STEAL, just like AJ Bouye was. Whether the team should have franchised Bouye is another question. I think it came down to the QB issue. Texans didn't know they were going to get Watson in the draft, so they probably had planned to go after and pay Romo. Of course, he decided to retire. If Free Agency was AFTER the draft, then Bouye would probably still be a Texans.
