I don’t want to hear about injuries. They lost watt last season and they were still one of the best defense. No defense should be giving up 80 yards in 3 players, that’s inexcusable. you have people blaming obrien over one play when the offense scored 38 points. Yet, they completely ignore vrables defense giving up 470 yards passing like it’s a video game. For some reason, this forum has a hard on for vrable just because you saw him coach the linebackers on hard knocks. At the end of the day, he’s just a position coach, not head coach/coordinator material. Fire vrable.
Vrabel is so horrible words don't even describe it. He needs to go back to being a position coach. We are near dead last in points given up and yes injuries have played a role but this is beyond ridiculous.
Comparing some stats from last year, we actually have more sacks, INTs and FF, and TFL through 9 games than we did this time last season. Biggest difference is that we only gave up 20 passing TDs last season while we've already given up 19 so far. I blasted Vrabel a few weeks back for playing cover 2 so much letting guys like Hogan, Cooks, and Kelsey run wild without anyone touching them but the last 2 games a have really exposed secondary's inability to man up. JJo had zero chance at stopping Hilton and Woods on those TDs. And Hal should be credited with giving up 2 TDs on that crossing route and run by Hilton. Those guys just got beat and beat bad.
I am largely unimpressed with the defense's performance this season. Too many long runs, too many long passes. Many times they appear out of position, like they don't know what they are supposed to do. That is coaching.
Being a coordinator is a whole different bag than being a position coach. I fear we're witnessing the "Peter Principle" in action. The Peter Principle basically states that people who are competent and successful in their current job keep getting promoted until they're eventually in a job where they're incompetent and unsuccessful. Part of our problem on defense (aside from injuries and the loss of Bouye) might be that we took two guys (Vrabel and Crennel) out of the positions they were best at and promoted them to jobs they are less effective at.
Vrabel is pretty much living on reputation at this point just cause he looks and sounds like a good coach. He has yet to prove that he can handle anything more than linebacker duty.
