Me too, man. Movies like this are the type of sci-fi I really enjoy. Don't get me wrong star wars etc is great (depending what episode ) but the darker Science Fiction is just a lot more interesting to me.
If "they" wait another 30 years (35 years, actually) to make another sequel, one thing is for sure. Ridley Scott won't be involved. More's the pity. Hey, thought I would look up the box office and found some good news! Including ticket sales overseas, it's rung up $240 million bucks! That's not bad at all. Around 64% of the total is outside the United States, and it's still in theaters. The budget was about $150 million. Usually, promotion accounts for a lot more in production expenses, but considering how poorly it was promoted in the States, I have a feeling that the promo budget wasn't as large as might have been expected for such a big release. Given that there has yet to be pay per view, cable, network, streaming sales, and other earning potential I've probably forgotten, it'll likely hit $300 million, eventually. That might be enough to get a sequel made. After all, the original ended up being a cult classic, with millions made from DVD, Bluray, cable, etc. over the last 35 years. The film had legs. This one might, as well. I need to keep my blaster in tip-top shape. Look below. Not bad after 35 years!
It's definitely not for mass audiences. I liken it to the final director's cut off the original, which was great for fans but needed some timely cuts to speed up the pacing. The director is to blame for this. He was too caught up in taking still shots. His pacing is deliberate and meant to draw the audience into the movie like he did with Arrival. The other thing that doomed this domestically was how depressing the setting and story was. Escapism into Scifi/fantasy is in vogue as we live in uncertain times. San Diego being a third world trash heap, an iradiated Las Vegas, and a replicant rebellion that nuked la as a backdrop is as fun as reading about political analysis in Washington with no clear answers. Despite some lapses where I had to strain for attention(I didn't piece together the final twist), I really liked this movie. It's been ten years too long since I saw the directors cut but they leave in enough references to gently remind you along the way. Edward James Olmos with his electric sheep origami. The recordings of Deckard and Rachael. The city that kept a lot over 30 years. I would definitely watch and remember this more than I would, say the last 5 marvel movies. Even the relationship between Joe/K and Joi had undertones of the last movie even if the result was different. Whereas Deckard questioned the origin of Rachael's feelings, Joi turned out to be a derivative simulation that tugged K's emptiness. The movie did a good job playing off the loyal, but simple love interest trope the audience accepts implicitly into a deeper inspection over relationships into a future we feel like we're heading into. What's love to a human/sim/replicant? The story itself is also a big tribute to the original, which explains the title. The problem to that was that it made the other characters and the universe it's set in inconsequential. How old is Jared Letos character? He looked more cyborg than bill Gates tycoon. Do cyborgs, a la Ghost in the Shell have a higher status than skinjobs? Spending a little more time on Love's character could've fleshed out the dichotomy between the replicant fems and provided needed depth into a female role. What made her and the Wallace replicants different? What is their existential purpose if they are, as Wallace says, an empty vessel? What limited them from the Tyrells other than being obedient slaves? It's those limitations and the small scope of the mystery (for better or worse, audiences have been trained with Scifi that has epic consequences) that also hurt it's chances with the box office, which is unfortunate because it's a solid story that tries to grasp with the human condition, whatever that means for us and our future incarnations.
FINALLY saw it. Was always worried they'd be reaching to find a storyline with a sequel and reincorporate Deckard into it, but I was WRONG. Loved it. LOVED.
Just purchased this on digital and saw this last night. It definitely did not disappoint. It felt like time flew by and that is always the sign of a good film in my book. I thought Ryan Gosling did a terrific job...as did the cast. Ford did a fine job as well. His acting here definitely was better than SW:TFA. I think this material is more suited for him. I especially enjoyed the settings, the special effects, and the soundtrack. It did not disappoint in the slightest in that regard. My subwoofer got a hell of a workout. It does seem like another film should be in the cards. There is a potentially a bigger story brewing here that was only hinted at. But, if there is a next one, then it's going to require a lot of thought to get right. This story definitely satisfied what it intended to accomplish. I'm just sorry I didn't catch it in theaters because I felt like around 3 hours in the theater was too much. But, knowing what I know now, time would have flown by because it was so engrossing.
I wish I could get into the digital movie thing because I was just thinking the other day how I really really want to see this movie again. It was so affecting and I want to get a second pass impression of it. But I plan to purchase it on BluRay when it is released on hard copy mediums so I'll have to wait another week or two, I guess.
Shame if you missed it in theaters, those effects where they superimpose that SMOKING HOT AI chick over the FAIRLY HOT prostitute looks NUTS on the big screen. Best visual effects I've ever seen maybe, which suits a Bladerunner movie nicely.
Was the place Deckard was residing and where Gosling finds him supposed to be something owned by Kim Jong or something? When Gosling enters you can see Korean characters on the windows and the place was extremely palatial and well stocked with the finest of amenities and luxuries.
I don't know about the Korean characters...but it was Las Vegas, right? I'm sure the finest of amenities and luxuries would apply to the penthouse of any casino in Vegas.
