#1 on ESPN: I disagree with a lot of their rankings even if they have us at #1, which I think shouldn't be the case with more impressive wins by the Grizzlies for example and how we rank defensively and offensively. I know they always rate with the talent level and eventual outcome of the season in the back of their minds, which is not what power rankings should be. Only CBS seems to do it based on just the current level of play and record.
Rankings after one week are meaningless. Other than maybe for a team like Boston who just suffered a devastating loss with the Hayward injury. Do we really think the 1-2 start for the Warriors has any real meaning? They may be more vulnerable this season, but they're still gonna be the favorite to win it all.
No, they are not meaningless necessary, they are what they are: currently how powerful they are. To me it should be no problem to have the Warriors 15th at the moment and next week at #1. It's not about talent level, how good they can be etc. The Warriors were beaten by us and the Grizzlies, not the worst of teams so they can still be in the top 10 if you consider how they played us pretty good and kept coming back at the Grizzlies. However, it's still just a ranking of how powerful teams are at the moment. Not the best team or anything serious like that. That's how I interpret power rankings anyway.
Rockets are 3-0 with a win @ Golden State. #1 in the Power Rankings. Explanation is entirely about Chris Paul having a rough start. Naturally
Uhmmm isn’t that what the standings are for? You take into account what the teams talent level is. Also what their record is, with more focus on the recent win/loss record of the team.
Exactly. The Warriors will eventually come back and destory everybody they play. They're clearly just coasting at this point. My concern is SA,
No, they treat it like the standings pretty much or what they think it should be. Sure you can take it into account but when the Warriors are 1-2 how can you justify they are ranked the 3nd most powerful team in the league at the moment / of week 1? Also Grizzlies beat them and are 2-0 yet are #14, huh??
Media job #1: Report news. Media job #2: If there's no news, make news. Or at least make something look like it's news. They designed these rankings so that when the Warriors pop back up to #1, it will look like news.
Also #1 for NBA.com and this time also not getting into our numbers on offense, defense or Harden's play, but give credit to Gordon though: Their rankings make more sense with the Grizzlies and Twolves in the top 10.
