i haven't watched embiid play much, but wasn't he touted to be the next hakeem? that's a mighty high potential. worth it if he can reach just half of hakeem's peak.
What are you talking about? They started making dumb decisions again as soon as they fired Hinkie. I dont care what kind of provisions are im Embids contract. Even if insurance pays for it it'll still count against their cap, otherwise all the other teams who signed players who got injured last year will complain (like Memphis last year with Portions).
He probably got that Dmo contract, health checkups every year with the ability to waive at multiple points. Downside is they threw away their cap for this upcoming free agency, but besides that no risk in having him on a max, if he's healthy he's easily worth if, if he isn't healthy and it's a problem they can waive him. Low risk deal for the 6ers. People need not forget, he is a allstar talent with superstar potential. He's shown that within his little time on the court, if he can stay healthy he will likely be a seriously special player.
Insanity. Players like this are the definition of what restricted free agency is for. Even if he missed another 50 games this year he might have drawn max contract interest, which is probably what the Sixers are thinking. But come on, ride it out and see. Worst case scenario you max him anyways a year from now and he's slightly less ingratiated to you.
If he’s essentially a team option every single year I actually like the trade off. I get that insurance will pay them back if he gets injured but the cap space is where the value is. If they didn’t get injury protections and team options every year they are very dumb.
@CDrex hold up, guys. Typically, I'd say, yes, this is what restricted free agency is for. But Embiid got the Designated Franchise player extension. Only one team can give him that, and that is the team who drafted him. Signing offer sheets doesn't help anyone get that. So, these franchise players might as well try to get signed via extension. Because of that, looks like 76ers were able to essentially just pay him regular max, with all that final 30% year being in the form of performance bonuses. Had they waited, and he plays 70+ games (which we all know would be at Max performance for his age), then no way he accepts any money being conditional.
Where 76ers might have really goofed though: they are only allowed to use the Designated Franchise rookie Supermax one more time while Embiid is still under that contract. What if Fultz and Simmons become stars, too. From Coon's FAQ: There is a limit to the number of designated players a team can have on its roster at a time. A team can have up to two designated rookies (who received a longer rookie scale extension) and up to two designated veterans (who received higher than the 30% maximum salary) at any time.2 However, only one designated rookie and one designated veteran may have been acquired from another team in a trade.
Hakeem is not injury prone and played almost his entire career healthily. He could still run up and down the court as well as anyone after he retired. What most people here don't seem to get is the odds of Embiid reaching his potential after his setbacks is almost zero already. Embiid isn't even in his prime, he is in his rookie years where his body is supposed to be able to endure all sorts of punishment without breaking down, Lebron and Dwight at this age could play all 4 quarters without rest, sleep, wake up and do it all over again no problem. If he is already this fragile now what will happen to him as his body starts to age? It's not even a guarantee he will complete this season healthily. That's why my belief is Sixers messed up, they should have traded Embiid and kept Noel instead. Noel at least is healthy and would have been the big man of Fultz for a long time.
Based off Embiid's contract? U do realize that Embiid and Capela are in entirely different tiers when it comes to potential and production right? Noel didn't even get close to 100 mil, and he's similar to Capela.
Lets suppose he is 2x capela. He has played 1/5 of the games. Your production=0 if you can't be on the court.
When healthy, he is more than 2x Capela. In an admittedly super small sample size of 31 games, he has already proven that he could be an incredibly rare and dominant player. But with that said, none of that matters if you can't stay on the court. The 76ers babied him last year with his minutes.... and he still got injured and missed the season.
And? Just because the Sixers offered Embiid that much money doesn't all of the sudden mean that Capela is getting 4/120 next summer. 30 mil/yr for Capela, lol Embiid is also a lot more than 2x Capela...they are in entirely different tiers and it's not even close
Because he has the potential to be a top 5 player in the league. Somebody was going to give him the max.
Yeah, but only Philly could give him the Designated Franchise tag to get his 5th year in an extension, and the super raise No offer sheet could do that, so Embiid likely never signs an offer sheet unless he gets injured again. He loses lot more money by signing a Max offer sheet, not only less raises but one less year containing that all important super raise to 30% of cap
I wonder how much money is guaranteed in the end, Shams said it's 50% guaranteed but he quickly deleted the tweet yesterday, if that's true i think you take that gamble without esitation tbh.
