Can something be ETHICAL but not be MORAL? Can something be MORAL but not ETHICAL? Just curious. They always seem to follow in statements but seem redundant eth·i·cal: relating to moral principles or the branch of knowledge dealing with these. mor·al: concerned with the principles of right and wrong behavior and the goodness or badness of human character. Can any legal types tell me what would happen if a lawyer's client admits to the lawyer that they committed a murder? Is the lawyer obligated to tell anyone? But I don't know the answer to my question (well, I kind of do, but...), so maybe it isn't a great example for Rocket River.
It's a trick question. Lawyers don't have attorney-client privilege, because they are not attorney's yet, so can't represent a client in court. So, the lawyer would be obligated to tell on the same ethical and moral grounds as you and me.
It goes against Ted Cruz's MORALS to look at p*rn at Twitter, and since he has no ETHICS he'll act like he was hacked.
Morals is a subset of religious constructs whereas ethics is based upon the rules of the system and not necessarily the spirit of the rules either. That's why Wall Street types claimed Goldman Sachs was some gold standard of integrity...within their context maybe, but to everyone else, they're sleezy SOBs out to get theirs.
My understanding of this is that "morals" apply to principles whereas "ethics" apply to rules. As rockbox stated ethics would apply to conduct. So you could be both moral and unethical and vice versa. For example as a doctor they Hippocratic Oath is an ethic. Ethically a doctor has to provide lifesaving care to anyone so a doctor would have to treat a mass murderer. Morally though a doctor might recognize that doing such might mean that murderer will go on to kill more people. On the flip side many doctors have argued that assisting suicide for someone who is in severe chronic pain is moral even though it violates the ethics of providing life saving care.
