You still have a point though, in that any offensive improvement is marginal, due to diminishing returns on offensive skill sets.

Melo might be better than Anderson, but if Melo shots 4/5 times he catches the ball in the corner, and he isn't as good at shooting, how much do we really gain from his ability to put the ball on the floor?

I still want him. I just don't think the difference will be as pronunoced as the optimist or the pessimist believe.

In the last 5 minutes of a close playoff game in the 4th quarter melos ability to create his own shot would be huge.

Stars are worth their weight in gold for those moments

Seems like most Carmelo threads are becoming about 15% updates and a good 85% f*ckery.

True, but in the last 5 minutes, I'd rather have CP3 or Harden handling the ball.

It just depends on matchups. I think 9/10 times, to close the game, Melo will be doing what Anderson does now. However, being able to post up melo if the opposition has 2 ace guard defenders will be a great option that we currently don't have.

It gives us versatility. Our maximum offensive output probably won't be that much different, but our volatility should be lower.

I agree that Melo's never waiving his trade veto to go to Portland--but that's because Portland's a small city, no glamor, and doesn't have any of his friends. I don't think it's because Portland doesn't have sufficient talent. They're not going to be as good as Houston, but IF Nurkic is for real (i.e. how he played after the trade is how he'll play going forward) then they should be pretty good. He'd give them a much-needed defensive anchor while also contributing a lot on offense.

In a normal setting--a player without a veto or a player who wasn't locked into playing with a friend of his--Portland would be a serious threat to land him, IMO. The whole reason we needed Portland or some other team is that we have no trade assets (that we'd actually trade for Melo--Capela would be a great trade asset, but he's presumably off the table) that New York would want. Portland has Harkless, whom New York apparently likes.

Right, but that's a coaching screw up. It's pretty much the worst case scenario, and we still haven't even factored in that Melo is likely to shoot a career high % on those corner 3's given he has never played on a team where the defensive has focused this little on him.

If the coaching is right - and there are no better tactical coaches than MDA - then Melo will be shooting a greater proportion of his shots inside than Anderson was (who was taking about 30% of his shots inside).

That slow-as-f*** no-lift step back jumper we had to endure all season? That's now a Carmelo Anthony straight up and down midrange jumper with the same defensive coverage that Anderson was receiving. That totally unnecessary pump fake at the 3pt line which would 9 times out of 10 end up being a soft pass to whoever is nearest to him? Now that's actually Melo making a drive to the basket, a move that requires just average athleticism.

If we're losing nothing defensively, then we shouldn't underestimate 2-3 more points added to our differential. That's significant. I'm obviously simplifying the heck out of it, but in general, there isn't a diminishing returns issue here. The offensive upside is unlimited. Warriors could have the best offensive season in NBA history, and we could have the 2nd best offensive season in NBA history, or vice versa. And that still wouldn't necessary be limited by anything other than what players we have and what system we run.

For there to be diminishing returns as we understand it, we have to assume that being RANKED first is the same as achieving maximum efficiency. I don't think that's a fair assumption.

Not worth it tho bruh. Im paying for all this f*ckery right now. Had to be at work at 8:15 and slept in a lil so I didnt get here till 8:26 haha.

Once it started, i had to stay up to see how it played out though. Funniest part is that he left, went back to monitor us with his blazer cronies, got really butthurt and came back with a vengence lol

This sounds eerily similar to when people claimed there's no way Durant would improve Golden State because they won 73 games & there's "only one ball". If you can't see why Melo would improve us greatly then you must be a pessimist.

Our offense last year was great and all but we were a high variance team that utterly relied on 3 point shooting. Once players stopped knocking down their shots we got exposed in the Playoffs.

The inclusions of both CP3 & Melo would give us a lot of offensive versatility with their vast skillsets.
