I'm confused: have they signed Gay or not?

Spotrac has the MLE already given to Gay?!!

Spurs are trying to avoid getting MOREYED.

Someone like Brooklyn was going to poison pill an offer at an exorbitant amount and then Spurs would have no recourse, but to decline. This gives them options. If Simmons wants to remain in San Antonio, they will pay him a fair market value.

    http://www.espn.com/nba/story/_/id/...-jonathon-simmons-now-unrestricted-free-agent

After withdrawing a qualifying offer, the San Antonio Spurs are working to complete a contract with guard Jonathon Simmons, league sources told ESPN.

Simmons, 27, had been a restricted free agent, but San Antonio has renounced his rights with hopes of signing him to a new contract. Thursday was the final day that teams could lift qualifying offers from restricted free agents.

San Antonio reached agreement on a guaranteed deal with Euroleague guard Brandon Paul, sources told ESPN. Paul, who played collegiately at Illinois, spent the 2016-17 season in Turkey and participated with the Cleveland Cavaliers in the 2017 Las Vegas Summer League.

Simmons blossomed over his two seasons with the Spurs. While his numbers during the 2016-17 regular season -- 6.2 points in 17.8 minutes per game -- were pedestrian, come the postseason, he showed he was ready for a more significant role.

In 15 games, the 6-foot-6 guard averaged 10.5 points in 20.4 minutes, notably helping the Spurs with MVP finalist Kawhi Leonard hurt.

Simmons went undrafted out of Houston. In 2013, he paid a $150 registration fee to join an open D-League tryout with about 60 players. His performance there eventually led to him joining the Spurs' D-League affiliate in Austin, and he ultimately signed a three-year deal with San Antonio in 2015.

The Vertical first reported the Spurs' decision to renounce Simmons' contract.

i think he's definately worth 8 million a year, even if his 3 ball aint perfect. he was locking harden down. and runs that full court. he'd fit perfect with us, could make up for harden and carmelo's defensive lapses. if we move ariza in melo deal and have some salary room, i'd sign him.

Per Bobby Marks tweet, Woj is contradicting himself here. Did they renounce him or withdraw the QO. Those are two completely different things. Woj is using both words...it's like he's saying something is "not imminent but soon."

I'm now betting Woj is misusing the word imminent (I mean the word "renounce"), and the Spurs have only withdrawn the QO, which he also says in the article.

By withdrawing the QO, the Early Bird Exception remains, so they can pay him up to 105% of last year's league average salary. Anyone know what that is?

If they actually renounced his Bird Rigths, then he's gone. But since this is the last day to withdraw the QO without OK from the player, and retain his Bird Rights ... I keep thinking ppl are misusing the word "imminent" here....oops, I mean the word "renounce". (Got Melo on the mind)

Just like Woj, this tweet might be reporting they are renouncing his RFA rights ... but that's not how Larry Coon says it. It's Withdrawing the QO. Renouncing rights is how we refer to renouncing Bird Rights and completely dropping the player's cap hold from team salary

The San Antonio Spurs have renounced the rights to guard Jonathon Simmons, making him an unrestricted free agent, league sources told The Vertical.

Simmons and the Spurs have had no new negotiations since the qualifying offer was pulled Thursday, and Simmons has focused fully on signing elsewhere, agent Cervando Tejeda told The Vertical.

Multiple teams were heavily involved throughout Simmons’ restricted free agency, but now will be more engaged with the unexpected renouncing of his rights, league sources said.
