I can promise you one of these non guaranteed players will become a most improved / borderline all star one day & ppl will post about it for the next 10 years. Morey failed again, missed out on the next Lin. Whiteside etc.

All data from Spotrac except where noted for non-guarantee deadline dates...

    Shawn Long - $1,312,611 - 9/26/17 ← salary guarantees at $50,000 for 2017-18 (from 76ers BasketballInsiders team salary page)

Ryan Kelly - $1,577,230 - 2017 non-guaranteed, fully if not waived on or before 7/7/17
Tim Quarterman - $1,312,611 - 1/10/18 ← fully guarantees for 2017-18 (from Blazers BasketballInsiders team salary page)

    Isaiah Taylor - $1,312,611 - 2017 non-guaranteed until 1st game (regular season)
Jarrod Uthoff - $1,312,611 - 2017 non-guaranteed, $200k guaranteed if not waived on or before 7/30/17, $250k guaranteed if not waived on or before 1st game of season, $400k guaranteed if not waived on or before 12/5/17

    $6,827,674 [total] x 1.75 =
$11,948,429.50 ← not correct per Bima (see spoiler below)
    $6,827,674 [total] + $5M = $11,827,674

I have to say something. Shawn Long can be a 10 minute big guy in cetain situations. So maybe he is part of the depth, may be we only had to get it earlier.

So if you were a one of those NG guy that Morey traded for, would you stay where you are knowing you're getting moved again or will you show up in Houston? Hmm...

Morey has always been a pioneer; analytics, conditional picks, cap manipulation, Moreyball, etc. That's a huge part of why a lot of us are huge fans of his. This guy literally seems to change the way the league sees things every other year.

yeah I'm always amazed at what they come up with. you hear things like vlade divac or magic johnson don't know much about the cba and then you see the things morey and his team do and you know we never have to worry about that. he finds the loophole wherever it is. I always wonder if that's just because we have a team of guys scouring the document to see if they can find something, if it's just a natural progression of trying to do something and realizing the loophole is there, if it's all morey, or what? I guess you could argue it's not in the spirit of the cba to do these things, but hey, he's putting in the effort to find these loopholes so what're you gonna do?

It's not just about finding loopholes, but also about him keeping them in his back pocket and waiting for a chance to pounce.

Nope. In fact, these non-guaranteed deals become much MORE valuable starting Saturday, when the Rockets can use the new (increased) minimum salaries under the new CBA, rather than the prorated (lower) minimum salaries of the contract signed mid-season this year. The new CBA only prohibits non-guaranteed salaries SIGNED under the new CBA from being included for salary-matching purposes.

    Kelly+Taylor+Quarterman+Long = $5,515,063. 175% of that + $100,000 = $9,751,360

Add Onuaku to that group, you get $6,827,674. Because of where that amount falls in the salary-matching rules, it is subject to the X + $5,000,000 rule. Therefore, that group can take back up to $11,827,674.

This latter figure is the one I think Morey was referring to during his press conference yesterday.

FWIW i dont think teams are helping the Rockets out because of the Warriors. Its a smart business move on their part. The money they receive is still better than having to pay the partial guarantee. Unless the teams themselves have any reason to hold onto the guys to trade they have no reason to keep the guys. They probably agreed to take them on as part of a cap clearing move further money any one of those guys are not worth enough in a trade - Morey had to package 3 of them in the CP trade for it to have value. Unless another team is trying to amass 3-4 of these guy to use a trade (possible but not much time left) they really have little value for the team that have them. With the loophole closing this could be the only time that this exploit could be used again.

Morey again using the CBA to his full advantage, I do not for a moment though believe other GMs didn't know about this but Morey was the first one to risk it and go for it. Again as much as people here crap on the guy you have to thank Les for being willing to pony up the cash for this. The Rockets are allowed to spend up to 3.5M on transactions like this but it doesnt mean that they have to. Most owners probably are not interested in wasted that sort of money to get back contracts like that since its still risky that a trade can fall through last minute and now we're stuck with a contract that we may need to wave and still pay a nominal amount or even worse if its past the guarantee deadline have to pay in full. Remember it was not too long ago Morey made the deals for both Asik and Lin thinking we had Bosh signed and sealed only for Miami to swoop in last minute and offer that 5th year. While the Asik deal became favorable for us (able to sign Ariza and get a FRP I think was used on Dekker) the Lin trade hurt as we gave up a FRP and the TPE was then used to get Brewer (ugh)

other teams are doing it because it helps them. every team will always do anything to help itself. like utah back in the day absorbing golden states bad salary contracts so they could use cap space on dwight howard. Or like that team selling the 2nd round pick to the warriors this year in the draft.

there is no collusion. no matter how little it benefits the team (could just be cash considerations), the team will always do any more that even slightly benefits them.

other gms and owners aren't just thinking "hey we hate the warriors, let's help the rockets beat them"
