West just missed with the Grizzlies, tbh. He built a solid team and had like a 50% chance at the #1 pick in the 2003 draft. Had he won that pick, he would have added LeBron James to a good team and likely had a title contender. Instead, the Grizzlies got the #2 pick and it was only top-one protected (from a trade that pre-dated West), so Detroit got it.
Magic had two rings with two different coaches before West became GM. I could have won a ring with Magic as a GM after that, just by doing nothing.
Rivers have done all he could, they need to go in a new direction, like Kerr taking over for Mark Jackson.
Despite no evidence that he's a good coach, Doc is beloved by players and media. He's an important part of the pitch to any free agents. Remember, Chris Paul was leaving the Clippers if they didn't hire Doc Rivers.
Mark Jackson had some serious issues, like being an insecure, paranoid control freak. Doc (the coach) has none of those and he isn't the reason the Clippers failed. Doc (the GM) on the other hand...
If I'm the Clippers, now that Doc the GM is gone and Jerry West is in charge, I give Doc one more year as coach. My 2 cents.
