Report: Carlos Correa not interested in signing contract extension
By Bill BaeApr 13, 2017, 4:05 PM ED

Agent Greg Genske said that his client, Astros shortstop Carlos Correa, “is never going to do [an early] multiyear contract,” Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports.

It’s not exactly a pressing matter, as Correa won’t become eligible for arbitration until after the 2018 season and he won’t become eligible for free agency until after the 2021 season. However, one of the biggest changes we’ve seen in baseball over the last few years is the tendencies for teams to try to sign their young star players to contract extensions even before they hit arbitration eligibility. Their thinking is that they pay more money up front to save significantly more money later on when the player establishes himself as a star. Take Giants ace Madison Bumgarner as an example. He’s signed to a five-year, $35 million contract with two club options for the 2018 and ’19 seasons. If he were to hit the free agent market right now, he’d earn hundreds of millions of dollars, but he took the up-front financial security when it was offered to him as a 22-year-old.

Correa, as Heyman notes, has a sponsorship deal with Adidas and other companies that will help him stay financially secure in the near future even if he suffers an injury and/or his performance drops off, hurting his future earnings. Correa, unlike Bumgarner, will forego money now to hopefully make much more money later.

In his first three seasons in the majors, Correa has hit .276/.354/.471 with 43 home runs, 167 RBI, 132 runs scored, and 27 stolen bases in 1,136 plate appearances. He’s already racked up over 10 Wins Above Replacement according to Baseball Reference, and he’s still five months away from his 23rd birthday

Uh, duh. As said in another thread, this is common sense thinking from Correa and his agent. He has absolutely no reason to give up potential future earnings for an early payday.

    I wouldn't say absolutely none.
--If he got hurt and couldnt ever play again in three years (lets say), he would benefit greatly from a contract that pays millions over the next few years.
    --If he lost his mojo
--If MLB ceases to exist in a few years.

OK, not many plausible reasons, I grant you. But you cant completely ignore or predict what the future will bring. Especially when the benefit of waiting doesn't kick in for 4-5 years.

Not to mention he hasn't exactly lived up to the hype as Gattis says in that stupid commercial "The best to ever play the game".

At this point he has the potential to get paid like a max player, but he still has a lot of work to do. Good thing he will be doing that work for us. That said, turning down an early deal was a no-brainer. non-story.

A player seeking to maximize his earning potential isn't really headline news.

An innumerable amount of things could occur between now and 2021.

Its comical that people expect him to be who he could be, right away.

Berkman was on the radio the other day and confirmed that a baseball player's "peak" years, really don't hit till around age 28-30... from a standpoint of understanding every single aspect of the game from a mental standpoint, and being as physically sound as one is going to be.

Certainly, players have had breakout seasons prior to that timeframe... but just because Correa hasn't "exploded" yet in what is now basically full season #2 , and hence he "hasn't lived up to the hype" is entirely asinine.

He's 22. Berkman (and Springer) weren't everyday players till age 25. Theres still a helluva lot more room for improvement.

As of yet he hasn't lived up to the hype. I would like to see the Astros lock him up for 10 more yrs because he his a good player with the potential to be great player but there are a ton of things that can keep him from getting there so let's stop with the charade that he's the golden child until that happens.

    Agreed.

I think a lot of people underestimate how long a 162 game season really is.

And lets stop questioning or criticizing his performance thus far, and claiming he's "overhyped", simply because he hasn't exploded to an MVP level at the age of 22 in what is now game 262 of his career (a little over 1.5 seasons).

At this point, with him still exceeding cumulative numbers for players (or shortstops) of his age.... he's as much of a golden child as this franchise has seen.

I guarantee if the Astros offered a long term contract averaging $30,000,000/year he would be interested.

Yep. He's younger than the top overall prospect on most preseason lists. He may never be an MVP, but he's looking great right now.

Correa is one of the few for whom it doesn't make sense to try to get some nice guaranteed money now in exchange for one or two years of free agency, because of his endorsements. Like his agent said, he's probably already financially set for life, so why bargain away a year or two where you might be able to demand $40M/year (I'm assuming that will be the going rate for MLB stars five years down the road).

IMO, A guy like Springer should at least consider the guaranteed money in exchange for one or two years of free agency. He hasn't gotten the same endorsement deals that Correa has gotten, and if he suffers some career ending injury, he might never get that huge payday. Ditto Keuchel.

What exactly was your expectation? At age 21 last year, he was 5th in MLB in offensive WAR, for whatever that stat is worth. The top 4? Mike Trout, Jose Altuve, Josh Donaldson and Kris Bryant, all 4 of whom were MVP candidates and are at least 3 years older.

Considering most MLB teams sign players to more or less what publicly available WAR models and aging curves suggest with a tilt favoring offense(not counting catchers and high end relief pitchers), oWAR probably is very relevant to this thread whether or not if people believe it accurately measures a player's value.
