Didn't realize he got tossed for hitting Miggy. Embarrassing for a guy who needs to make the most of his opportunities since they figure to be few.
It was the first game of spring training. It could be anybody out there and it wouldn't worry me. If anybody was disappointing, it was Teoscar and Marisnick, since both could be big parts of this team. 5 Ks combined in 6 plate appearances. Moran also struck out in both of his, but I'm not optimistic about him anymore. Regardless, it doesn't really matter.
Interested to see if the Astros follow the spring season trend of other teams to save their pitchers for the post season, given that we are expected to get that far. Or if they rationalize the Nolan Ryan theory to give them more work. Pitchers generally seem to be unhappy about less spring training work. Ron Darling thought the best time for McCullers to work on his throws to first would be to do his drills after he pitched a game in Spring Training because his arm would still be warm. Otherwise a waste of time to do it on rest days, yet most of the league does exactly that.
What would Singleton have to do make you want to put him on the opening day roster? Hit .800 with 15 bombs?
That is a good question. He has always showed signs of being capable but lacking consistency. He wouldn't be at spring training at all if there wasn't some bar in someones mind that if met would gain him a spot. Realistically, .280 with a decent walk and strike out rate might do it depending on what the other contenders for 1st base bring.
I suppose it follows that the guys they want to take the longest look at are the ones most played early.
Maybe his presence is a reminder to Reed that his ascent to the majors is not a given. Back to the point of Singleton, a spring around 900 ops with good defense would suffice.
I think it is supposed to be Brady Rodgers. He is on the Astros home page as the starter and he is #62.
