His production is still very high and $40 million over four years would be a steal, especially in this market. After losing on Bazemore, there are very few 3 and D players we could sign unless we're willing to max Harrison Barnes.

Absolutely, shot 38% from 3 last year, still a serviceable player. Throw him a 3/36M offer. If we're desperate, 4/48M.

This is silly, we need to rebuild. We're not doing that with 30 yr old Courtney Lee

For sure I'd like to bring him back . Try to get him on a 3 year deal vs 4 . Even if you have to pay a higher amount .

Unless your plan is to trade Harden for draft picks, we are not rebuilding.

Rebuild? We have Harden on this team which means we will not have a top 10 pick. We need to retool and figure out how to build a strong team around Harden. I think a good step would be to acquire a guy like Lee.

If we get him on what becomes considered a value contract, he can be a chip in the rebuilding process. You need good players on good value contracts in order to complete trades for draft picks or young talent.

So if we can get him on the right contract, I'm all for it.

We are not contending inside the next 2 years and if people doubt that fact, they are delusional. If you think Harden will bolt if we don't contend before he's a free agent then we need to trade him. If we think harden will stay as long as we are trending up and building a winner, then signing Courtney Lee is a terrible idea. Either way, signing 30 yr old Lee is a waste of money.

You're not rebuilding with Harden why can't people comprehend this? He's obviously not getting traded unless he asks out. He's a star you don't just go around trading star players.

Great point; I just don't see us getting him on a value contract in this aggressive overcrowded cash-soaked free agency

You do understand that we there is a salary floor and the money has got to be spent somewhere right?

Trading star players can fundamentally alter the trajectory of a team and set you up for success for years to come. It can also be a terrible idea. But our trajectory is pointing decidedly down. Harden can leave in 2 years; we aren't contending inside of 2 years. Trading Harden has to be part of the conversation at this point or people are being obtuse. This free agency fail really hurts.

I think the point is why distribute the money to the guys on the team when we know how they play? Might as well try to bring in new talent to help

That seems like a way to get around a max salary. A team doesn't reach the floor and all players make more? Or are max players not allowed to receive any of that $?

    Great. Go sign talent then.

But signing guys to big money "because we gotta hit the salary floor!" ... no.
