Another annual spring-offensive is underway. They briefly took Kunduz last year. Starting to see why sudden troop withdrawals are not such a great thing.

I don't understand the strategy, you can't win hearts and minds with indiscriminate killing of civilians, you can't promote religious tenets with violence, you don't build true loyalty with fear.

I hate that we lost so many American lives trying to bring freedom to that region but now that we are getting out I hope we stay out. Let them be mad at some other government and find peace in their own way.

Are they winning our hearts and minds?

Or are they a bit xenophobic?

That's de-personalizing the effects, it's what conservative do for their convenience. You can choose your perspective: me screw the rest of you, my state screw the North, my country screw them. The most logical scale is probably that humans are all one group riding on a blue marble through space, no philosophy, no religion, no boundaries separate us here:

    yes I did.

It's easy to isolate yourself into groups of us and them when you are the advantaged. You seem willing to write off the women and children of Afghanistan as a them. They are human beings worthy of reasonable support. It's the Christian thing to do.

Your post just wrote them off.

at about the levels we have now... if nothing else, to support humanitarian aid.

I'd rather bomb them with TV, radios, computers and cover the nation with wifi drones. Then I would poison their culture with boy bands and Hitchens talks.

well, this is certainly an improvement to when the Bush Admin. funded the Taliban for anti-drug efforts.

at least now America isn't actively funding the f**kers.

Maybe, maybe not. We fund the ISI after they get the cash, who knows where it goes.

You really need to get away from the propaganda. Mr. Obama has dealt with the Middle East Issues he inherited reasonably and responsibly taking the blame for what he see as his own failings. You can't "solve" it, you can't dictate solutions, all you can do is try to navigate the parties and direct the actions as best you can with the information you have and quite frankly with the assets you have.

It's not a magical government you know.

no, but far less of it can be blamed on Americans.

Not being able to blame their problems on Americans has never stopped people in the middle east from blaming their problems on Americans in the past, it won't stop them now either.

it gets a bit harder to want to kill America when you're focused on killing the even more religious zealots trying to kill you--a problem for extremists that is not unique to the Taliban incidentally.

The steaming pile of refuse that the middle east has become has happened on President Obama's watch. He took credit for "ending the war in Iraq". Do you think that the war is over for the people of Iraq? Obama is responsible for the decisions he has made and the consequences of those decisions is a humanitarian disaster.

    The buck stops here.
