The concept seems to have merit. Nobody is going to purposefully throw their head into another person if they expect it will result in injury. If you enforce behavior patterns in practice, they will likely translate over to the field of play.

I've always thought the helmet causes more violent collisions. The helmet is used as a weapon.

They should give players bicycle helmets. The kind without the hard shell.

It may help with concussions, but how many other new injuries will it create? How often do player end up piled on other people's heads after tackles or loose balls? How often do people land awkwardly when flipped over during a tackle or jumping for a catch? How many necks will get snapped by accident?

This study is a very controlled environment of people/dummies standing up and being tackled. But football is not so controlled - the amount of contact in weird/awkward positions is endless. An exposed head seems like a recipe for severe head injuries and even possible deaths.

I think you're missing the fact that this is advocating for no-helmet practices, not no-helmet games. Incidental contact is probably a lot less common in practice than in games. Purposeful contact is obviously significantly more common in games than practice.

As far as neck snapping goes, I don't think helmets do much to stop that. That's more of a neck roll/pad thing than anything.

Taking helmets away (or at least reducing the face protection... which definitely emboldens players to tackle stuff with their head) will result in more busted teeth and noses, that's for sure. But that's probably a livable consequence like in rugby/hockey.

Why does football need to be safe? The players are choosing to play, it is not forced upon them. Have them sign a waiver acknowledging the dangers of playing football and stop changing the game.

Gotcha - I did miss that.

That's true - why not do that for everything life? Who cares if airlines do safety inspections? Just have people sign a waiver before getting on the plane. Going to a restaurant? Forget about food safety - just sign a waiver.

No, mitigating permanent brain damage in one's intellectually and professionally formative years is more important than your, mine or anyone else's temporary weekend amusement.
