You make some excellent points about offense, but you're practically ignoring defense. At the end of the day, people rate two-way players higher than just offensive player/defensive players. Lawson is elite offensively, but there is much lacking on the other side of the court. Although I believe Lawson to be in the top 10, he's not as high as 6, as you claim. FYI, Dragic and Lowry are not overrated on this board by any means. I'd personally rather have Dragic or Lowry on the team. They may not be on Lawson's level as a distributor, but they both offer good value on both sides of the court. I'm more than happy with Lawson, but that's just my opinion.
He's the near the top in scoring and playmaking but defense and intangibles (rebounding, leadership, hustle) knock him down a peg. To me the 2nd tier of PG consisting of Lawson, Lowry, Dragic, Blesdoe, Teague all may as well be equal. I don't understand why people are so hung up on each one being properly numbered 1 through 30. The 1st tier, 2nd tier, last tier type ranking makes more sense to me.
I don't have access to advanced stats but it seems to me that the gap between 9.6 assists per game and 6.8 (Lowry) 6.2 (Lilliard) 5.4 (Conley) 4.5 (Dragic) is greater than the gap between Lawson's defense and those guys. Lawson is an ELITE passer and ELITE at taking care of the ball. According to the above stat if had Blake Griffin and DJ to throw it to he could be leading the league in assists instead of CP3. Lawson is near the absolute best at what a PGs main function is. Distribute the ball and don't turn it over. He can also get to the rim with the best of them and is an adequate outside shooter. You want a defensive specialist we have Bev. If you want a PG we have one of the best.
Lol I didn't know my fellow Rockets fans were so supportive to a fault. There is no way Ty is a top 10 point guard.
There's so many great pgs that rankings really fluctuate from season to season (aside from the top 4-5). I'd say he's potentially top 10, but wasn't last year.
I like Lawson, I think his addition is a very big one. But some of you guys are just going overboard with the homerism. The poll is 70% YES right now, it should be closer to 50% because he's a borderline top 10 PG. Conley is most certainly a better PG than Lawson. Lawson might be the better pure passer but Conley is miles and miles ahead of Lawson as a defender. Conley is clearly the better 2-way PG and imo is one of the most underrated players in the league. If we traded Lawson for Conley right now, we'd be a hell of a lot better. And I'm someone who's a big fan of the Lawson trade. Ty Lawson is almost certainly a top 10 offensive PG though. His combination of quickness and passing is almost as good as it gets. He's a better pure passer than Harden, which is going to give us 2 elite passers in the backcourt. I still love this move.
Excellent argument. This is the more important perspective. Screw all these top 10 lists, what matters is he fills huge holes in our game and that can put the Rockets at the top.
My top 10 Point Guards: 1. Chris Paul 2. Stephen Curry 3. Russell Westbrook 4. Kyrie Irving 5. Damian Lillard 6. John Wall 7. Tony Parker 8. Mike Conley 9. Kyle Lowry 10. Goran Dragic Derrick Rose would still be in my top 10 when healthy. Lawson could probably be 12th on my list along with Jeff Teague.
It's definitely up for debate. He seems to be fading but considering the leadership & championship experience he brings to a team, he's still top 10 for me.
To answer this question a good one I might add depends on how you and the Rockets would like the point guard position to be played. If for example Damian Lillard was traded to the Rockets, he would in my opinion no question be the better player, but would he be the better point guard? I look at Lillard as more of a scoring point guard and I am not sure if that's what the Rockets really need. My answer to this question is that Lawson is a top ten point guard for the Rockets, because he is a capable scorer but is also very good at creating shots for others, not making foolish turnovers and taking pressure away from his teammates (Harden) from having to run the offense.
Ty lawson is better than Dragic and Lowry. Dragic and Lowry should be grateful they are eastern conference point guards. Can't wait to see what Dragic does in Miami next to Wade and how that's compared to what Ty does next to Harden. I'm in agreement with the fact that the disparity between these point guards defense isn't as big as the disparity between how great of a passed in terms of assist Lawson is compared to these guys.
Yea cause Thabo Sefalosha was definitely better than James Harden. And every mediocre SG the Spurs had were way better the Ginobli. Roles matter buddy, but you seem to be the only one arguing that they don't. Iggy is a better player than Barnes, care to tell me who started? What makes this even funnier, is the fact that we don't even know who is going to be starting. You are getting all worked up over a couple people saying he would excel in a 6th man type role, and somehow using that as an argument for how he isn't that good. Some strange logic there. Edit: After re-reading your post, it is pretty obvious you are a troll, so I shouldn't have wasted the energy. As it is, I already typed it, so what the hey.
I'd take them over these three guys: Lilliard: God his defense is bad, offensively and more specifically as a shooter he is way better. Teague: Actually, I think its really close between these two. Parker: Two years ago, no way. Current Parker is a shade of himself but he has always been a terrible defender. He is a way better defender these three: Curry: My god, he is the worst MVP on defense in the history of the NBA not named Nash Lilliard: That's his weakness, otherwise he is a top point guard. Parker: Has always been a terrible defender.
1. Chris Paul 2. Steph Curry 3. Russell Westbrook 4. John Wall 5. Kyrie Irving 6. Dame Lillard 7. Mike Conley 8. Goran Dragic 9. Kyle Lowry 10. Jeff Teague 11. Derrick Rose 12. Tony Parker 13. Jrue Holiday 14. Eric Bledsoe 15. Reggie Jackson 16.Ty Lawson 17. Ricky Rubio 18. George Hill 19. Elfrid Payton 20. Kemba Walker
The problem I have with those ranking is they are completely subjective and they give you no idea how they calculate the numbers. This is not a ranking it is an opinion poll, an eye test list by a bunch of sports writers. . Lawson is third in assists and has a low turnover rate and is 10th in playmaking? Leadership? How do they measure that without spending time in practice and the locker room? Paul is the greatest leader? Then why can't he lead a quality team and beat a team without a starting PG that is playing two old guys against him? I guess the NBA has a dearth of leadership at the PG position. IMO Curry is the best leader cause he was his team's best player and now they have a ring. All that said I'm not really a fan of Lawson today but I hope that changes. I would put him in the 11-15 range based on my level of gaseous expulsions in the last 3 hours. I feel this ranking will have just as much value in determining Lawson's impact on the Rockets as any other.
Lets just focus on a couple names that people consistently seem to put above Lawson which are absolutely ridiculous. Derrick Rose - Rose has played 100 games total over the past 4 years. Less than 25%. His Playoff TS% over 40 games is under 50%, which is horrific. He has one win share total over his past two years....One....ONE. If you look me straight in face and tell me that you would rather have Rose on your team than Ty Lawson, I would punch you in the nose. Jeff Teague - Teague has been on a mediocre Hawks team for 6 years. He has never been anything more than an average PG. Lawson blows him out of the water offensively, and neither are good defensive players. Reggie Jackson - Reggie Jackson might be the worst player I have ever seen. Low scoring efficiency, Jeremy Lin level turnovers, and average to below average at best on defense. You want to argue that Conley, Dragic, Lowry are better, fine, I get it. But god help you if you think any of the three above even come close to Ty Lawson.
