No need to do all that . http://media.ccomrcdn.com/media/sta...ault/daryl_morey_pgs_4-17-15_0_1429265630.mp3 starts at 1:05:15
Just saw 790 tweet out the link to the Morey interview: http://www.sports790.com/onair/houston-rockets-2015-playoff-central-52908/rockets-gm-daryl-morey-on-pgs-13547464 Loved the part of him talking about the championship pedigree on the team, with McHale as a player, and Terry, Ariza & Brewer with rings.
-Appreciates the positive feedback. Tough to get that far...you get greedy when you get that far. -(Golden State) They're more the classic build model. At least 3 top ten picks they're building around. They'll be a tough opponent. We have to learn to battle them and they're not the only tough team in the West. -Always difficult to peg the cap. We try to keep things flexible. We have the ability to create max cap room. If we renounce every free agent, $10 mil is about the number. If we operate above the cap, which is most likely, MLE and 2 draft picks. That's the situation as it stands. -(Getting a "real" PG in or letting James continue to handle it) It comes down to quality of the player. ... You want your best players having the ball. ... We're a pretty good team. Golden State was fantastic & historic. We're at a phase where the next step is hard. No easy fixes or answers. Every player has to improve. [Mentions D-Mo, TJones, Capela, KJ & Nick Johnson] It won't be a linear thing. -(How valuable are Brewer & Smith) Extremely valuable. We're looking for more stability. We have our core with James & Dwight. We are looking to build more chemistry around them. This season coming up, besides young players stepping up and additions we plan to make, more chemistry with guys sticking together will be another way we improve. -(GS's core, you got 2 highly paid stars, is it possible where you can have a 3-4 player core where guys are paid the max?) It's hard. Structure of the league makes it hard to keep together with 4-5-6 good players. Good problem to have but the structure of the CBA makes it hard to pull off over time. -(How many one year deals do you anticipate happening?) Hard to anticipate. Agents and teams look at shorter deals but this will be a year they look harder. Hard to know until you get in the middle of it. -(Still believe in 3-star approach?) You need as many elite players you can get. GS is sitting on many good players. They had a historic season and beat us pretty good unfortunately. More quality players is a good thing. Once you have them, you want good chemistry. -(How far away is Capela?) He can contribute next year. He represented himself well. Barring injury, we're excited and can be a major contributor behind Dwight. He has to get stronger, learn the league, he'll get his scouting reports once in the backup role next year. We're bullish on him and can be a big reason we improve next year. -(Full control of his nutrition?) He's compliant. He wants to improve. You tell him to do something once, he does. He realizes he's around greatness with Hakeem and Dwight. He's a sponge soaking it all in. His improvement curve is very high. -(Sergio Llull) Good player, has lots of options. Arguably best guard in Europe. Someone we do have interest in and if we can make it work, good addition to the team. (Is he interested?) Question for him. He accomplished everything you can accomplish internationally. Potentially this is a year he takes a closer look at it. (Unhide the FT column on the spreadsheet) We like the attempts number. ... We have to improve. It is something that improves over time. We've had good success, whether Chuck Hayes, (study shows) we were number one or two in improving player's FT%. It's another area for upside. When you 56, not a lot of areas for upside. (Need improvement at PG or PF more?) To catch GS, OKC healthy, we gotta improve internally, chemistry, we'll look at everything. You don't know who will be available or will fit. Too many variables. You're hitting me 2 days after the season ended. (Anything to say to/about the fans?) Support has been amazing, carried us through the playoffs. Game 7 against LAC was unbelievable. Our guys got greeted at the airport, that meant a lot. We're a big destination, Texas is a great but it's also the fans. Thanks to everyone.
Can't help but feel like Morey is trying to play possum a little bit this offseason. I think he's saying the right thing that they want to keep everyone together, but if Smith, Brewer, and Beverley are set with other offers to leave the Rockets, I think that actually might be more of what Morey wants anyways if that does give him the opportunity with a S&T or cap space to sign someone significant. Brewer aside, I just really don't buy that Morey thinks Josh Smith and Pat Beverley are that significant if letting them go gives him opportunities elsewhere. If he gets them both back on minimum deals of course he wants them, but I don't see them as highly paid players Morey would want back.
That was a great move from our fans. Not just a wonderful gesture but I think it’ll definitely help Mouri when he makes the case to free agents that we have a supportive fan base. Having a great fan base is definitely an important variable when players and agents consider their options. Pretty cool way for fans to help their organization recruit, IMHO.
This is also what Zach Lowe said on his podcast. Also, Kevin Pelton on the Dunkd on podcast said its very likely we will go after Love or Aldridge. I guess we shall see, but I am very excited about the offseason.
They just posted the podcast here: http://www.sports790.com/onair/the-proper-gentlemen-of-sports-52356/rockets-gm-daryl-morey-on-pgs-13632910
Not that it was unexpected, but glad to hear him confirm Capela's status as Dwight's backup. Very excited about that guy.
Feels like a safe bet. I can't remember the last time an all-star decided to leave his team and Morey didn't try hard to get him.
Yeah I hate when people overrate young guys, but he's got special qualities. Already so good on the pick and roll. Easily could see him starting after Dwight's done.
After all that has been done still do this day a PF and PG is needed on this team. So much for getting rid of Scola. Scola should be on team instead of Dorsey.
scola doesn't have the legs to hit his shots these days. i'd try to trade a cache of young players for david west.
I just heard on my drive home from work..

Rockets GM @dmorey will join us on @SportsTalk790 following his conference call with the media. Morey just said that Ty had a huge part of making this trade happen. Houston was his top location to get traded to.
