No, KJ is a natural 2 guard, he's Brewer insurance. He's here to make Harden work in practice

Kj is gone for sure. Maybe back to philly, that would be funny.

He said: It's hard to see them being willing or able to match a sheet on McDaniels that came in at, say, $6 or $7 million annually.

Rockets might not be able to match a 1.1 million offer. They just need to wait a few days and see if we use the full MLE on Llull. No need to over pay then.

It all depends on what develops on the free agency front. Two things have to happen for the Rockets to lose KJ:

    1) They stay over the cap
    2) They use the full MLE on another player (likely Llull)

It's entirely possible that we trade for a PG (and don't sign Llull) or that we dip below the cap to sign both Llull and KJ.

It's not time to give up on KJ yet.

KJ's max contract (according to the CBA) is the MLE, though I believe the Lakers could front load it (similar to what we did with Asik/Lin, but the reverse).

This is true. The 1st year of the salary can not be more then the non-tax payer MLE. The 2nd year can not be more than the normal 4.5% raise. However, the 3rd year is not limited to normal 4.5% raise. The 3rd year of the contract can be for as much as the maximum allowable salary this season which is roughly ~15 million.

For the team signing KJ in that scenario, the cap hit would be the average of all three years of the contract. Roughly ~8.7 mil each season.

For the team matching the contract (Houston) they would have the normal cap hit just like the contract is written; 5.46 mil 1st year, 5.7 mil 2nd year and ~15 mil in the 3rd year.

The 3rd year is what gets most teams.

can't front load it. With salary cap about to explode, back loading it shouldn't impact Rockets. If a team did go after him, Rockets couldn't use MLE on both him and Llull.

Even if you backload it, doesnt the effect on the cap hit it eqaully.

A la Jerry Lin; 5+5+15=25. Cap hit was 8mil/yr.

If thats the case, i dont think were going to even have enough cap this year to sign him at all.

Team matching gets uneven cap hit. It is specifically messed up to give team chance to match player with MLE even if average value exceeds MLE. Team offering deal gets even cap hits.

That's not how it works for the matching team. If the Rockets match that contract the cap hit would be 5/5/15.

The only team that gets to even out the cap hit is the team trying to sign him away.

I could see him getting 3 mil a year for 3 years.

I'm also having trouble accepting this $10-$15 million over 3 years dream.

I don't know if he'll get 3/per and I'm not sure we should give that to him.

Why would someone pay him that much? He showed some prowess as an athletic defender but had little consistency and then had a season-ending injury. Who wants to take the risk to pay him that much?

Besides, with the cap increase next year he should just sign a one year deal with us (or whoever) and then play well to get the big contract.

    Nik Stauskas $2,745,840 $2,869,440 $2,993,040 $3,807,146 = 3.1m average

If we go under the cap I count about 8.4m in space we can create without doing trades. 5.5m for Llull leave 2.9m for McDaniels. So is doable if he wants to stay.

A team that has seen him day in and day out like the Rockets or 76ers that can better project his future than those of us that just didn't see him play that often. Possibly teams that scouted him extensively over last season that think he will be a steal at 10 to 15 mil a year.
