You're coming from a personal perspective since you have personal experience with Morey. I'm giving an outside observation. He is one of the more seen and heard GMs in sport. He's very accesible to the fans which is why he is very popular here. But I'm sure fans outside of Houston see him as arrogant because of his popularity (kind of the way Curry is starting to be seen by other fan bases). Curry may be a great man if you get to know him personally but his has an air of arrogance about him to outside fan bases. Curry and his team, however, are in the middle of a historic season. Morey up to this point hasn't accomplished anything historical. What I'm basically trying to say is Morey is very well known for a GM who hasn't accomplished much which can be seen as arrogance by others.
I agree. Look at other big market team GMs that constantly work on improving the way Morey has (Knicks, Lakers). Everything Morey posts is not out of arrogance, it's mostly out of good fun. He is a big fun nerd. If he started explaining his moves, he would probably go right over your head. Any way, I like what he is doing. It might not be the sexiest way to do it... The Spurs were not the sexiest team in the league, but they got rings. If you're a non believer, then get on the Warriors bandwagon, they got plenty of room for you. Go Morey. Go Rox!
Mostly fool's gold... A Dallas team that was imploding and hobbled by injuries. A Clippers squad that got overconfident and took their foot off the gas pedal leading to a miracle comeback. Not to mention their brutal 7 games series with SA and lack of quality depth led to them being gassed later on in the series. And CP3 missed the first two games with injuries as well. We've all seen what's happened to the Rockets now that they've come up against a real championship contender. The team couldn't have played better than they did in the first two games at GSW and still lost, not to mention being humiliated at home yesterday. Not only are the Warriors going to be back next year, but OKC is going to be healthy.
Batman, can you whisper in his ear to do something about the woeful coaching? Our current coaching staff is unable to make timely adjustments for the playoff level. Example: Warriors are winning 2-0, yet they adjusted their defense on Harden in Game 3. The Rockets still ran Terry and Prigs out there for the majority of the game, and only ran Nick as an afterthought.
If you begin to feel an intense and crushing feeling of religious terror at the concept, don't be alarmed. This indicates only that you are still sane.
He is well known for the way he brought analytics to the game... an approach that brought a hurt Rockets team to the WCF in the most competitive conference I've ever recalled. If we were in the East, we would probably been to the Final. He was able to lure Howard from Mark Cuban - who over-pays for everything. He does so much with so little - dropping Lin and Asik's poison contracts and at least getting a first round pick out of it. Picking up Capela. KJ McDaniels, papanikoluao (sp). I'm sure you're pissed that we are in this position this year and even more that the Warriors are a very good arrogant team. If Morey wasn't the GM, we probably would not even be playing in this series this year. Get over your butt-hurtedness and your indignation. Morey has been called out by Mark Cuban, Charles Barkley, and other "nerd haters." They're just jealous of his accomplishments. If he hasn't been successful, he would not have this much attention. Think about it.
Hind-site 20/20 my friend. Your revisionist theories are only good for the past. If we didn't have Morey's system, we would not be in this position. Yes there are always things needed to improve. There is a reason that the Warriors won 67 freakin games... they're that much better than everyone else and the league is partial to Curry. Get over it. We will be tied for the 3rd best team this season. That's pretty damn good considering.
Morey has done some good things in his tenure no doubt, but the team he built I feel, is still too flawed to go all the way, which should be the goal. It's great the team made it to the WCF, and as I have said in other threads, this can be seen as a successful year no matter what happens after this, but Morey is put on a ridiculous pedestal by this fan base. This team doesn't even follow his efficient philosophy of threes and free throws with all the brick layers on the team from outside and the free throw line. Harden has covered so many flaws with his great season. I also think it shows some arrogance that he feels his system is so great that he can stick with a puppet for a coach. Also Morey has badly failed to get an adequate pg since he traded for Harden and pg is one of the deepest positions in the NBA. The Rox are being sooo exposed in this series and its hard to watch. I know Morey is a fan favorite here and is going to be protected and stood up for by the majority of the fan base, but he isn't as great as a lot of people thinks he is. This butt whooping in the Conference Finals should be an eye opener hopefully.
I have expressed concerns in the past about McHale to him but I wouldn't do that now and I was wrong then. McHale should have been up for coach of the year with what he's done in the face of incredible adversity this season. And that's just in the regular season. He has been even better in the playoffs. Of course the Warriors adjusted their defense. They only won those two games by an average of 2.5 points. They weren't going to come onto our court without making adjustments. McHale's adjustments throughout the playoffs have had a better result than Greg Popovich's. We are losing but we are losing in the Western Conference Finals. By definition, we do not suck. By definition, we are a top 4 team in the league. By definition, we are in the top 2 in the West. You want me to ask him to change what again? As for your last point, your complaint boils down to "The Rockets played a point guard." Because those are the only PG's on our team apart from the injured Beverley.
I'll be sure to pass along this nugget of wisdom. This may be just the push he needs to upgrade the roster.
I don't think he is arrogant either. But I think sometimes he does comes across as smug on twitter. If you are his friend, maybe you should tell him to ease off from the social media. The Internet has its own life when it comes to building a persona.
I can appreciate that but I only became friends with Morey shortly before the Howard acquisition. I had an outside perspective well before I came to know him personally and my past posts here will reveal me to be a very big Morey fan from well before I knew him. It's hard for me to understand why everyone isn't one right now with the season we've had but that's sports.
I would never insult a friend like that. And, just as I wouldn't suggest a coaching change to him when I don't want one myself, I'm not bothered by his tweets. I like them. He's a public figure. He'll always have detractors. But I'm not going to tell him not to be himself. He's a typical Ohioan, authentic to the core. Nobody has to like him but he is who he is and I don't really think there's anything anyone can point to that he has said that can reasonably be regarded as arrogant. But I like Morey. Completely apart from knowing him as a person I like him as a GM. Rather, I think he's the best GM in the NBA and a pretty humble guy to boot. That's been my feeling since long before we met.
Not to be a massive cliche but Rome wasn't built in a day. After 2 years of building around Harden/Howard (really 1 year - first year was focused on getting Howard), we were able to make the WCF. I think the core is perfect, and in another 1-2 years Morey will make the moves necessary to compete for the Championship every year.
flexibility is clearly a cornerstone of morey's salary cap management, and undoubtedly it has paid off over the long haul. of course it could be strongly argued that it hurt us this season and in this playoff run, as we did not cash in a lot of assets at the trade deadline for better PG depth. moving on in any case, it is really puzzling that morey has not embraced flexibility with regard to this team's offense. the read & react system is very useful at times during the season, during games, during stretches of games. but it clearly is not effective 100% of the time, and this team needs semblances of structure at certain times and against certain matchups. so why not have alternative system(s) to fall back on in those instances, where we can instead force the defense into mismatches via player movement? regarding the roster itself, if you are going to shoot so many 3's then you need at least 1 elite shooter. james would probably average 9 assts/game if we had just 1 guy in the lineup who could shoot lights out. mchale has shown improvement this postseason. but again his team has collapsed in epic fashion to end the season for the 4th consecutive year -- each of those with completely different rosters. and we have had astonishing lack of effort in several games during both the regular season and postseason. i hope that morey has a handle on the reasons behind these massive breakdowns and they get addressed this offseason, because the booing at the end of game 3 indicates that fanbase has had enough. to get so far in the playoffs and not even compete in multiple games now is just mindboggling.
