He was the best non-pitcher in baseball in 2009. I don't care if the majority of fans don't appreciate Zobrist. The average number one overall pick averages about 20 WAR in a career. Zobrist is at 34 WAR. Zobrist will likely produce about twice the expected production over a career as the number one pick. Yes, I would consider getting at least twice as much production out of a pick than its usual production as a win.
If you could guarantee me Ben Zobrists career at #2, I would gladly take it right now. Having a middle infielder that good, that is under the teams control for a long time is extremely important.
Every year there are 1st round flops and bottom round stars. But in baseball, where guys take up to 6 years to develop, judging a draft is a thing about being patiently waiting to do so. if the Astros get a fringe all star, but a solid regular contributor, i call it a win....
I think the Astros are hoping to get two above average regulars with the picks. i hear about how weak the draft is. but that is related to sky is the limit potential type guys at the top of the draft. This draft might not have glamour, but there are some all stars there. hopefully the Astros find and pick them.
Baseball America: Top 200 As always, that list will expand to 500 before draft day. 1. Brendan Rodgers, SS, Lake Mary HS, Plantation, Florida 2. Dansby Swanson, SS, Vanderbilt 3. Dillon Tate, RHP, UC Santa Barbara 4. Alex Bregman, 2B/SS, LSU 5. Daz Cameron, OF, Eagle's Landing Christian Academy, McDonough, Georgia 6. Carson Fulmer, RHP, Vanderbilt 7. Garrett Whitley, OF, Niskayuna HS, Niskayuna, New York 8. Kyle Tucker, OF, Plant HS, Tampa 9. Andrew Benintendi, OF, Arkansas 10. Trenton Clark, OF, Richland HS, North Richland Hills, Texas
#57 out of Tomball (Concordia Lutheran) Ke-Bryan Hayes. Really like this kid, gives me that Anthony Rendon vibe. Committed to Tennessee..
ha. I wonder if the terms of the settlement allow him to be picked up by the Astros again? (or if he'd be ok with it). He may not have hard feelings towards the 'Stros, getting paid twice by the AL's top team ain't too shabby
Seems like an awful, immature decision. He's scratching the one team who has definite interest in him off the board. And maybe they'd give him a friendlier bonus because of last year's clusterfck, if they happened to draft him again.
I would say it is not a wise financial decision in the short term. Considering the ordeal he had last year, I can see not trusting the Astros from his point of view. It was not personal for Astros, but it is very personal for Nix. I would not trust a company that I got a $1.5 million dollar settlement from in case there is bad blood there.
Unless anyone knows personally about the feelings Nix has about the Astros, the Aikens debacle twarted his deal with Astros. I would figure if the Astros drafted Nix, he would sign.
Didn't Nix fire his agent he shared with Aiken? It is unlikely, but Nix might reconsider before it is all said and done.
Nix isn't going to be an Astro. http://www.si.com/mlb/2015/03/31/jacob-nix-houston-astros-brady-aiken-mlb-draft
