Let me preface this by saying I still think he's an average coach who's best talent is developing big men and recruiting free agents. However, no other playoff team has missed as many games due to injury as the Rockets. No other playoff team has missed as many games from their starters due to injury. Yet the Rockets will finish 2nd or 3rd in the impossible Western Conference. Normally this award doesn't go to the coach with the most talented team, but the team that overachieved in comparison to people's expectations. I think Kerr and Bud still get votes for finishing #1 in their respective conferences, I think McHale and Kidd will get votes for overachieving. I'm not saying he will win it, but he's going to be in the running, and no one has been talking about it.
Because there is no need to talk about it Kerr or Budenholzer for coach of the year /thread regarding Mchale time to open a thread to discuss Kerr or Budenholzer also Harden for MVP /thread
Ddi you guys read the OP? He's not even saying he should win. BUT it is weird that he's not part of te discussion. I dn't even think he's that great of a coach, but the STORY is that of someone who should be in contention. If you had been told prior to the season that our players would miss this many games and that we would be the 2/3 seed at the end of March, you would think that McHale would HAVE to be a contender for COTY, especially with so many people picking us to be a bottom tier playoff team, with some saying we wouldn't even make playiffs.
I like it OP. The man doesn't get enough credit. Except don't tell that to all the armchair coaches we have on Clutchfans.
Lol, the dichotomy in this board is ridiculous. The thread right below this is demanding he gets fired.
And that's fine, but he should get consideration. Also, Mchale haters should actually push hard for him to get COY as that would mean his inevitable canning
A valid question, except the fact that Steve Kerr and Mike Budenholzer are very clearly, far and away, the #1 and #2 choices for coach of the year. McHale is, at best, a very very distant 3rd
People, including Rockets fans, undervalue a guy who has somehow come away with an amazing record in spite of so much injury. But, Kerr, who took an already good team free of any major injuries, is the leading candidate for COY. Perception >>> Reality.
