Let's look at the big picture. If the playoffs were to start today, the Rockets would have home court advantage over the Raptors.

If OKC holds on, at least we know with 99% certainty it will be pick 13 or 14. Not a lot of guessing.

 

The Celtics, Jazz, Pistons and Pacers are all between 2-3 Pythagorean losses behind the Pels. And three of those four teams are probably going to improve with the players they're adding (Thomas, Jackson, George). You should be rooting for those teams to win, along with the Suns. And of course, root for the Pelicans to lose.

Give the man credit, he was on a historic pace.

 

He was and is a monster. Not MVP worthy yet to be sure, but don't discredit the numbers he was putting up.

So if the Pelicans don't make the playoffs, we get the pick? And if they do get it, do we get their pick next year? Seems we either want them to free-fall, or somehow knock the Thunder out of the playoffs, make it a little easier for the Rockets playoff road.

 

It's gonna be pick 13 or 14 unfortunately. There's no reason for them to put the cue in the rack and tank out the season, so free fall won't happen (unless their entire starting 5 is sidelined for the rest of the season - but that piece of bad lack tends to afflict tanking teams only)

 

we need to draft a PG with the pick.

 

Our last pick in that range (Toronto's 12) landed us Harden, I'm hopefully we can turn it into something.

I'd be pretty happy if we could get Dwight healthy and a PG semi project out of the Pels pick if we can't move it for immediate help.

 

Morey seems pretty good at finding passable PGs. Hopefully late lotto he can get us a starter.
Most likely result is that he surprises everyone by drafting a young big, who turns out to be awesome, but spends next year in the DLeague, while Capela plays backup C - and turns out to be awesome.

The Rockets will most likely get the pick regardless of whether the Pelicans make the playoffs or not.

If New Orleans misses the playoffs, that pick will likely be either 13 or 14.

If the Pelicans make it, the pick will probably be in the 17-19 range (depending on what teams like Washington, Milwaukee, San Antonio and Dallas do).

The Rockets get that pick if it falls anywhere in the 4-19 range.

I HATE this mentality.

If there is no quality players available to trade for with this pick, then why the hell would you trade it? ..... Because its "Hot"??? What does that even mean?

Look... future draft picks aren't use it or lose it commodities. Some very good quality players are drafted in the late lottery every year.

If the best the NOLA pick would have gotten the Rockets is a player like a Wilson Chandler rental (mind you a player who would be playing for minutes with or BEHIND Ariza, Smith, D-Mo, Brewer, and Jones) then give me a lottery pick for 4 guaranteed years any day of the week. Especially if its a PG lottery pick. What spot did Zach Levine go last Summer? What about Nurkic?

The Rockets are trying to win now sure, but this team doesn't have the young talent to hold sustained success long term after this year, and especially after Dwight is past his prime which might be sooner rather than later. Give me more young talent any day of the week rather than just dealing the pick for said veteran player who might not even have a role on this team.

And no.... nobody was giving up a Goran Dragic, Ty Lawson, etc. for just the Pelles pick.

 

13 or 14 will turn into a nice rotation player or possible trade piece.

I wish Cauley-Stein would fall to us but I doubt he'll make it that far.
