Guard? I'm guessing they hope that's S'ua Filo in the future along with Brooks. Ben Jones can move over to center. Then they can cut Myers. Two linebackers? Yes, please. A qb? Yes, please. Two starting corners? Well, Joseph is old and expensive. He's a possible cut candidate. Kareem is a free agent. Bouye and Morris are decent depth but do you want them starting? They could possibly delve into free agency for this position.
Tanking isn't going to solve this team's problems. Having young players who produce like average NFL starters while not making $5-10mil/yr is what needs to happen. When the only competent players (other than Watt) on your team are making huge money because they're on their 2nd contracts, then the team clearly lacks talent.
Still a really dumb reason to "tank." Throwing away an entire season so you can get the 1st pick in every round instead of the 10th pick in every round is a horrible way to run a franchise unless there is a once in a lifetime, can't miss guy at #1 - which there isn't.
Indeed. Tanking in the NFL is absolutely stupid, unless you're down to the last game or two of the year and fighting for #1. And even then, it's iffy unless there's a surefire pro-bowler waiting to be drafted. Now... playing for *next* year (i.e. developing young guys) is a different story.
The season is already thrown away, when you can't beat a team like this year's Steelers, you are wasting your time. Since the season is already a bust, you might as well get the best possible players in the draft.
I don't think they are a good a team so it wouldn't be really tanking. Even bad NFL teams can go 7-9 8-8 with a few bounces here or there, but that same team could be 2-14.
How do you propose tanking? Players have salaries to earn, and many won't be here next year and have contracts to earn. Do you expect them to not play hard? Do you expect the rookie head coach - and his assistants who don't have any kind of long term job security - to call bad plays? Intentionally create a bad gameplan? Bench good players? From a procedural standpoint, how do you suggest the team intentionally lose?
Well they could start Mallett, that alone would go a long way towards tanking and as an added bonus, it would shut up the change for the sake of change crowd. Another change would be to use Blue a lot more often and use Foster less.
This team will be 4-4 at the half-way point. Throw in 3 more games against the Jags and Titans, the Texans will win 7 to 8 games. The last few is why we won't get to 9 with the ceiling of 10. BoB needs to get his ish straight.
Can't count on wins in any of those games, if you can't beat this year's Steelers, you can't assume that you beat any team in the NFL.
All joking aside, you're right. The idea of tanking after 7 games is ridiculous. I think you can do more harm than good to a team, especially one that is trying to create a new identity with a new coaching staff. This team/staff needs to let them play it out and see what they have for next year. Plus, as bad as we think the texans are, I don't think they will be able to match the losses of raiders/jags/bucs/jets at the end of the year. And even if by some nightmarish reason the texans are in a position to jockey for the #1 pick, there isn't that sure fire guy at that spot...regardless of what some may want to argue
I think if we don't beat the Titans, we might have to start thinking about Mallet/Savage after the bye. If we win with them, we'll take it and if we don't, so be it. Is that jumping the gun?
What do you think that does to morale of your players if they see the coach intentionally playing players to help them lose? If the coach and management are trying to lose, why should players train hard? Why should they try to get any better? Why should they try to refine their route running or tackling skills? How does that affect their skillset or effort levels in future years? Everyone here claims that JJ Watt is their favorite player / best player / etc due to his 100% effort and commitment to training and improving and winning. How do you think he reacts to seeing his rookie head coach not care about winning? It's been clear for a long time that you're terrible at judging football talent, but now it's also becoming clear you have no idea how to lead people or an organization in general.
Good point major... But if the Texans did tank, how does he propose the Texans will get the best players in the draft just because they have a high pick in each round when they probably didn't get the best players out of this past draft when they had a top pick in each round.
