I bet they'd be upset at any team that leaked the failed physical (with diagnosis) along with the player having an agent.
For all we know, Aiken's parents were the ones who leaked the physical (which showed a healthy elbow with a small UCL). Jeff Luhnow, Casey Close, Aiken's parents. One of these things is not like the others. Rookie mistakes were made and were most likely made by the rookie.
I'm pretty sure it was somebody within the Astros organization... the same source that fed Ken Rosenthal all the Luhnow-Porter stuff. Drelich also quoted somebody within the Astros circle (not Aiken's parents). I'm sure the Aiken's would have wanted that kept out of the spotlight... and have it perceived as just a money thing. Now, regardless of whether or not having a small UCL really makes him more injury prone, its going to lower his initial earning potential.
Joke about how we can get a real haul in '16 if we sign no one in '15. Looks like there's plenty of talent. Doubt we'll take the SS with Correa.
Cameron, Matuella, Bregman, DJ Stewart - would be huge to come away with 2 of them. We should be able get at least one at #2.
We should just keep drafting Aiken over and over again. We're a crappy enough franchise where we can smite ourselves in a war of attrition, all just to ruin one family's lives. It's funny how baseball works. There's literally nothing us fans can do to push Crane out the door, because even if no one shows up, and no one watches on TV, he'll still be turning a profit on the backs of his revenue sharing. Disgusting.
Rules prevent the Astros from drafting him again without his consent... so your plan wouldn't necessarily work out.
He didn't have any case. There was an abnormality in his film. The Astros made an offer above the threshold. The Astros increased their offer close to the deadline. The Aiken's attorney did not negotiate in good faith the last 24 hours. It is unfortunate for Brady, and I understand his parents being upset. If he were my son, I would hate the Astros too. Likewise, if I were Crane I would have lowered my offer as well. Just an unfortunate situation.
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p>And here's the 2015 MLB draft order <a href="http://t.co/toggjC2nTb">http://t.co/toggjC2nTb</a> via <a href="https://twitter.com/CBSSports">@cbssports</a></p>— Eye on Baseball (@EyeOnBaseball) <a href="https://twitter.com/EyeOnBaseball/status/516400856837545984">September 29, 2014</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> So it looks like the Astros will be getting the 2nd and 5th pick in the draft!!
Unless my calculations are wrong, that would mean that our bonus pool would be 16.1 million dollars. This is using last year's slot values which should see an increase this year. Also that comp pick will most likely drop a few spots, but that is still a lot of money
FWIW, this site (mymlbdraft.com) has the Astros taking Phil Bickford at #2 and Daz Cameron at #5 in a very, very early mock.
With the large bonus pool, I expect the Stros to possibly meet/exceed slot recommendations to get the absolute best talent available (rather than trying to spread it out to get "unsignable" players later).
