In poker terms Cuban read Morey and used his staunch commitment to his logical formula against him. Cuban got Morey to fold a better hand. It happens - let's see what the season brings. DD
You guys sound a lot like OKC fans when Harden was traded here and the Rockets gave him a max contract... I'm waiting to see how things turn out before I point and laugh.
I kind of wonder what the locker room situation would have been like had they brought him back this year on his old deal. Parsons doesn't seem like that kind of guy at all, but you kept on hearing last year about "agenda's". Could have had something to do with him more than we would ever think. The smart thing for Morey would have been for him to have the foresight last year to see this coming, and trade him before June 30th... giving a team (like Minnesota maybe?) the ability to make him a RFA and match. The Rockets get an asset or two for Parsons, and Parsons gets to go somewhere knowing he's getting matched at the max & have a better shot at making the all-star team most likely. The logical thing I can think happened here is Morey & co. actually thought they could pull off a Bosh like signing and match Parsons thinking that Parsons would be happier coming back well paid and on a super contender. However at the end of the day Morey really should have been able to see that Parsons really just wanted to get out from underneath the shadow of Harden & Howard & go be a star somewhere much like Harden with OKC. He was going to find his way out of Houston at some point. Probably should have traded him before June 30th. Whatever. I'm pretty much over it. What's done is done.
Yeah your analogy is the ultimate Apple and Oranges argument since Parsons isn't close to being what Harden was 2 years ago.
Easy to say in hindsight, DD. Morey had a bigger picture in plan and Les was willing to pay a lot for it. That alone shows Dwight how committed we are to bringing a title back to Houston.
That's a BETA ass mentality DD. Even you reach for the sky's when it comes to your player potential threads. Remember Budinger and the rookie Kobe numbers?
Morey knows when to hold 'em Knows when to fold 'em Knows when to walk away Knows when to run He never counts his money When he's sittin' at the table There'll be time enough for countin' When the dealin's done Daryl Morey knows That the secret to survivin' Is knowin' what to throw away And knowin' what to keep
He doesn't have to put up Harden's numbers to prove his value. If he can average around 20 ppg which is highly possible in that offensive system playing with a stretch 4 like Dirk and starts back playing defense _ he would be worth that price. The bad thing for Dallas is that if Parsons turns out to be worth the money... That contract is only for two years.
I think Parsons will be close to being worth that contract. But never actually worth it. He's making James Harden money, but is not on the talent level of James Harden. That's the entire point. Harden put up the numbers Parsons put up last year at a much younger age playing way less minutes per game. There's no comparison to that difference. Parsons put up his numbers playing almost the most minutes in the NBA without opposing teams best wing defenders on him. Keep that in mind.
Are Dallas going to make Parsons their primary option? With the exception of Tyson Chandler and maybe Aminu, they've stacked up on guys that can't play defense.
I have no idea what they will do. But I do believe Parsons will average more than 13 field goal attempts like he did here in Houston. If he gets that up to around 15 with an extra trip or two to the free throw line that could end up being around 20 ppg. I don't care what Dallas does as a team, my only concern is what Parsons does and how he plays... Especially if he looks like a championship piece and we got nothing for him.
