It means we pay him a heck of a lot of money to hold McHale's hand through the whole head coaching thing.
He shouldn't take the Laker or Minnesota jobs, those teams have roster trouble. If the Cavs get Embiid he could get them respectable eventually and he could do the same for Utah. But if he wants to win a championship, he should come here. Especially if we get a third star, which he could play a part in attracting as well.
Logically, you would think that if he doesn't get a HC job then Houston would be the best place for him. If we look good defensively then Hollins looks like a mastermind, whereas GS already has the ability to play good team defense.
If there's no head coaching job he likes, being the Rockets de facto defensive coordinator is probably not a bad gig. The Rockets can give him basically total control over defense, and given that our defensive reputation is utter crap, improvement would result in a juicy resume for his next HC job. There's also the possibility of being promoted given McHale's advanced age and final year of his contract. As opposed to GSW who just got their guy. Imagine if McHale retires, suddenly Hollins would inherit 50+ win team. I think if there's no good HC position for him, Lionel Hollins coming here is a very distinct possibility.
Personally, I'd probably skip all of those gigs and wait for a nice HC job to open up, which with his pedigree I think he can do. That's just me though, maybe he wants to get back on the sidelines. One thing I wouldn't do is give him an in-season out like we gave Sampson.
Definite yes to this. It's pretty freaking evident that McHale is nothing but a figurehead. In Houston he would essentially be the head coach without the title.
This is BS. If Morey reads this board in the slightest, he should know McHale has to go. He was brought in to be a name, and nobody cares about that anymore. We want titles. Why would the LH ruin his reputation by being an assistant to such a terrible head coach? We lost to an inferior team we should've beaten in 5 games. Even worse, watching McHale trying to manage...I mean...you almost felt sorry and embarrassed for him. It was dreadful. If any adjustments came by an extended hand of Morey, that needs to stop. Right now, we're the Dallas Cowboys. The Lin signing was a pure Jerry Jones move. Sticking with a bad coach to save face, is a pure Jerry move as well. McHale is essentially Jason Garrett as far as their duties are required. Not qualified, which forces them to do exactly what the GM wants, due to there being no other option available. No band aids Morey. We need a surgeon.
