Our thoughts go out to Kevin McHale and his family. Coach McHale's mom passed away last night. He did not travel with the team to Portland.
— ClutchFans (@clutchfans) December 12, 2013
Clutch says McHAle is not in Portland with the team. Maybe he is flying there tomorrow. Not that i don't like McHale but we can hold down the fort without him. Stay with your family.
I'm glad it wasn't something more serious, but man, McHale is having a rough time of it this year. EDIT: Someone just sent me a "death is pretty serious, WTF?" note---neg rep? Don't know. I suppose I meant that I'm glad my earlier speculation was incorrect. The loss of a child just beginning to live her life was probably the harder kick in the gut than losing his Mom who had a full complement of years (86), but it's still rough as hell, and one thing on top of another for a family still trying to cope from the first loss. Reminds me that my Gramma's 87 next month and so my wife (whom Gramma adores) and I try to visit her as much as we can. Hell, she might outlast us both, but you never know how long you're gonna have somebody around.
I'm guessing he's thinking more in terms of the sports team than in terms of the individual and his family. Anyway, no point in hashing this out. I'm sure everyone agrees this is a sad occasion.
There was many theories that another child was sick. I think that is much worse than someone who lived a full live into what I'm just assuming is late 70s? I think that is all that was meant.
Anybody who knows McHale raves about how kind and genuine he is. This is a rough time for our leader but I think he knows the fans and his guys(team) are all behind him. Deepest condolences to the McHale family.
http://houston.cbslocal.com/2013/12/11/mchales-mother-passes-sampson-will-coach-at-portlant/ Rockets Coach Kevin McHale was away from his team the last two days and now his return is unknown. Multiple reports Wednesday night indicated his mother has passed away. “It’s tough,” James Harden said after today’s practice but before the reason was known publicly as to why McHale wasn’t with the squad. “He’s our leader. He’s our mentor. It is a sad story for his family.” Kelvin Sampson has taken over the coaching duties in McHale’s absence. “Hopefully we get coach back as soon as we can,” Jeremy Lin said Tuesday. “But Coach Sampson is also capable and he knows what he is doing as well.” The Rockets will play in Portland Thursday night, at GoldenState Friday and conclude the three-game west coast trip Sunday at Sacramento. The funeral for McHale’s mother will be held Friday in Minnesota.
