Thanks to the NBA Dish thread (http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=245964) for pointing this out. I really like a lot of these new stats on the NBA.com website. Obviously the current values can't be relied upon due to small sample size, but the type of new information provided is great and will be worth tracking as the season progresses. For example: Driving (Team PPG on Player Drives) Lin is currently 2nd behind Dragic, Parsons is 4th, Harden is 6th, and if you adjust it on a minutes played basis, Lin actually comes out on top. Possession Tracking (Front court touches/game, points per half court touch) Passing (FT Assists/Hockey Assists/Points created from assists) Defense (Opponent FG% At Rim) Omer had a better showing on this one, probably due to Dwight getting assigned to McRoberts while Asik was on Jefferson. Rebounding (REB%, Contested/Uncontested REB) Dwight getting a ton of uncontested rebounds. Will need to combine the stats later to see how good the players are at grabbing contested rebounds. Maybe something like (contested reb)/(contested reb + missed reb chances) And also various shooting stats (Catch & Shoot/Pull ups).
Good one Carl. I copied the rebounding data to Excel to try and calculate a better contested REB % stat (I'm less interested in what % of a player's rebounds were contested than in what % of contested rebound chances did the player come away with). Filtering to require more than 8 rebound chances a game to make the list more manageable to start, Cousins tops the list grabbing 6 contested rebounds and only missing 1 rebound "chance". The top 50 from the list sorted by %: Code: DeMarcus Cousins (SAC) 0.857142857 Anthony Davis (NOP) 0.75 Andre Drummond (DET) 0.666666667 Tiago Splitter (SAS) 0.666666667 Lance Stephenson (IND) 0.666666667 Jordan Hill (LAL) 0.615384615 Miles Plumlee (PHX) 0.6 DeAndre Jordan (LAC) 0.6 Roy Hibbert (IND) 0.571428571 Kevin Garnett (BKN) 0.545454545 Draymond Green (GSW) 0.533333333 Kevin Love (MIN) 0.5 Tyson Chandler (NYK) 0.5 Jonas Valanciunas (TOR) 0.5 Thaddeus Young (PHI) 0.5 Shawn Marion (DAL) 0.5 Trevor Booker (WAS) 0.5 Omer Asik (HOU) 0.473684211 Pau Gasol (LAL) 0.473684211 PJ Tucker (PHX) 0.428571429 Kris Humphries (BOS) 0.411764706 Marcin Gortat (WAS) 0.4 Earl Clark (CLE) 0.4 Marcus Morris (PHX) 0.4 Nikola Vucevic (ORL) 0.387096774 Tyler Hansbrough (TOR) 0.384615385 Zaza Pachulia (MIL) 0.384615385 Rudy Gobert (UTA) 0.375 Chris Kaman (LAL) 0.375 Landry Fields (TOR) 0.375 Derrick Favors (UTA) 0.363636364 Dwight Howard (HOU) 0.357142857 Luol Deng (CHI) 0.357142857 Chris Bosh (MIA) 0.35 Al Jefferson (CHA) 0.333333333 Joakim Noah (CHI) 0.333333333 Nicolas Batum (POR) 0.333333333 Trevor Ariza (WAS) 0.333333333 Brook Lopez (BKN) 0.333333333 Kendrick Perkins (OKC) 0.333333333 Carlos Boozer (CHI) 0.333333333 Carmelo Anthony (NYK) 0.333333333 Al Horford (ATL) 0.333333333 Bismack Biyombo (CHA) 0.333333333 Tristan Thompson (CLE) 0.307692308 Greg Monroe (DET) 0.3 Reggie Evans (BKN) 0.3 Steven Adams (OKC) 0.3 Marc Gasol (MEM) 0.285714286 Dwight doesn't come out too well here, but one deficiency in this metric is that it's considered contested if an opponent is within 3.5 feet. But if Asik is also nearby and comes away with the rebound, then that would count as a miss for Dwight. I wish there was a stat that would track not only if there was an opponent close by, but how many bodies were nearby (fighting against 2+ opponents, or an opponent and Asik and coming away with the rebound being more impressive than beating out a single opponent).
This stat doesn't account for the Dwight effect. People give up fighting for rebounds with Dwight around because they feel its a lost cause.
Maybe. But from the other thread: Dwight had 6 OREB, 20 DREB, which pretty closely matches his 5 contested, 21 uncontested rebounds. The other team not trying explains why he gets a ton of uncontested rebounds. It doesn't explain why of his contested "chances", he comes away with relatively fewer of them.
Catch and shoot 3pt fg/game: # 1 in nba, Francisco Garcia. I would not object to keeping that stat there the rest of the season.
How did you extract the data? I'm trying to figure out an automated way to do that, but they have not made it easy.
I just copied and pasted. As you said, it's a pain, so I'm going to try to use filters that limit the lists to <100 players at a time, but if you're careful about what you highlight, it translates straight into Excel. From their FAQ, it looks like they're not planning on making the data generally available:
Sick data. Thanks. Interesting fact, Lin and Harden share almost the same amount of touches, with line being 1 spot ahead of Harden.
For entire NBA: Player points per game on drive: JHarden #1, JLin #3 Team points per game on drive: JLin #2, JHarden #4 May have Howard now, but still driving to the basket.
Lin is 4th in the number of drives taken (14) - two of those above him played two games already and the one that hadn't is Goran Dragic with 15 in one game. Another Lin v. Dragic Comparison Goran Dragic (PHX) 1 41.5 50.0% 15 8 15.0 8.0 17.0 9.3 Jeremy Lin (HOU) 1 30.6 60.0% 14 9 14.0 9.0 15.0 14.1
Took them a while to upload the stats after the second game, but they were pretty fast about updating after the third. Lin still #2 on team points per drive behind Dragic, and tied with Harden at #3 for personal points per drive. Garcia tied at #1 for catch-and-shoot points per game Asik #2 in Opponent FG% at Rim (20.8%) among players with Opponent FGA>3.5 per game. Howard's much closer to the bottom allowing 58.1% at the rim. Is it due to defensive assignments where Howard's on better players? Still too small a sample size though. Dwight still #1 in rebounds per game, Asik tied with Kris Humphries at #1 for contested rebounds per game. And in the contested rebound chances won among players with at least 8 rebound chances per game, Asik is at #8, Dwight is at #25: Code: Player Contested Rebounds Won % Shawn Marion (DAL) 0.6976744186 DeMarcus Cousins (SAC) 0.625 DeAndre Jordan (LAC) 0.5747126437 Nikola Pekovic (MIN) 0.5714285714 Jordan Hill (LAL) 0.5555555556 Tyson Chandler (NYK) 0.55 Andre Drummond (DET) 0.5454545455 Omer Asik (HOU) 0.5384615385 Pau Gasol (LAL) 0.5164835165 Anthony Davis (NOP) 0.5135135135 Ian Mahinmi (IND) 0.5 Kevin Love (MIN) 0.5 Roy Hibbert (IND) 0.5 Jonas Valanciunas (TOR) 0.5 Kevin Garnett (BKN) 0.5 Landry Fields (TOR) 0.5 Thaddeus Young (PHI) 0.4761904762 Trevor Booker (WAS) 0.4736842105 Al Horford (ATL) 0.4666666667 Greg Stiemsma (NOP) 0.45 Draymond Green (GSW) 0.45 Samuel Dalembert (DAL) 0.417721519 Kris Humphries (BOS) 0.4117647059 Blake Griffin (LAC) 0.4065934066 Dwight Howard (HOU) 0.4056603774 Chris Kaman (LAL) 0.4029850746 Kawhi Leonard (SAS) 0.3939393939 Miles Plumlee (PHX) 0.3928571429 Zaza Pachulia (MIL) 0.3913043478 Enes Kanter (UTA) 0.3897058824 Tiago Splitter (SAS) 0.3883495146 Paul George (IND) 0.3863636364 Kenneth Faried (DEN) 0.380952381 Derrick Williams (MIN) 0.375 Taj Gibson (CHI) 0.375 LaMarcus Aldridge (POR) 0.37 Marcin Gortat (WAS) 0.3636363636 DeJuan Blair (DAL) 0.3636363636 Nikola Vucevic (ORL) 0.3495934959 Luol Deng (CHI) 0.3484848485 Vitor Faverani (BOS) 0.3448275862 Joakim Noah (CHI) 0.34375 Jason Thompson (SAC) 0.34 Al Jefferson (CHA) 0.3333333333 JJ Hickson (DEN) 0.3333333333 Carmelo Anthony (NYK) 0.3333333333 Rudy Gay (TOR) 0.3333333333 LeBron James (MIA) 0.3333333333 Zach Randolph (MEM) 0.33125 Nicolas Batum (POR) 0.3285714286 Joel Freeland (POR) 0.3285714286 Steven Adams (OKC) 0.3181818182 Tyler Hansbrough (TOR) 0.3157894737 Josh McRoberts (CHA) 0.3150684932 Spencer Hawes (PHI) 0.3138686131 Trevor Ariza (WAS) 0.3125 Derrick Favors (UTA) 0.3076923077 Amir Johnson (TOR) 0.3076923077 Greg Monroe (DET) 0.303030303 Dirk Nowitzki (DAL) 0.303030303 Chris Bosh (MIA) 0.3026315789 Carlos Boozer (CHI) 0.2985074627 Kosta Koufos (MEM) 0.298245614 Jeff Green (BOS) 0.2727272727 DeMarre Carroll (ATL) 0.2727272727 Jimmy Butler (CHI) 0.2702702703 Brook Lopez (BKN) 0.2666666667 Robin Lopez (POR) 0.2597402597 Tristan Thompson (CLE) 0.2523364486 Anderson Varejao (CLE) 0.2523364486 Serge Ibaka (OKC) 0.25 Marc Gasol (MEM) 0.25 Andrew Nicholson (ORL) 0.25 Paul Millsap (ATL) 0.2352941176 David Lee (GSW) 0.2307692308 Bismack Biyombo (CHA) 0.2297297297 Wesley Matthews (POR) 0.2280701754 Tim Duncan (SAS) 0.2222222222 Darrell Arthur (DEN) 0.2142857143 Victor Oladipo (ORL) 0.2127659574 Chandler Parsons (HOU) 0.2125 Michael Kidd-Gilchrist (CHA) 0.2063492063 Andrew Bogut (GSW) 0.2048192771 Kyrie Irving (CLE) 0.1785714286 Josh Smith (DET) 0.1764705882 Evan Turner (PHI) 0.1688311688 Kyle Singler (DET) 0.1666666667 David West (IND) 0.1625 Damian Lillard (POR) 0.1590909091 Markieff Morris (PHX) 0.1428571429 Dante Cunningham (MIN) 0.1428571429 Caron Butler (MIL) 0.1 Omri Casspi (HOU) 0.0833333333 Xavier Henry (LAL) 0.0638297872 Eric Bledsoe (PHX) 0 Rockets are not showing well on the passing/pull-up stats so far, which matches how they've played in these first 3 games.
Team stats tell a bit of an interesting story as well: Rockets are #1 in NetRtg (differential between ORtg/DRtg). Despite our TO problems, with the 2nd worst TO ratio in the league, we are actually 9th in points allowed off of turnovers. Conversely, despite our 2nd best REB% in the league, we are 10th worst so far in securing the defensive rebound, which has led to us being the 4th worst team in allowing second chance points. We're 18th in opponent FG% in the restricted area, but 10th in opponent FGA in the restricted area. We're 3rd in opponent FG% in the mid-range, and we allow the 2nd most shots there (is that because of our defense or because we faced bad teams?). We've also been lucky that our opponents have only shot 18% on the corner 3, but we've been the 4th best in not allowing that shot to happen. This has allowed us to remain at #2 in opposing FG% allowed despite yesterday's poor showing On the offensive end, the Rockets are 8th in FG% in the restricted area, 7th in FGA in the restricted area, and 2nd in FGA for the corner 3, though we're only hitting it at a slightly above average rate. But of course, we take the fewest FGA in the mid-range, and it's not even close. #Moreyball.
hmmmm interesting, so far, Lin FG on drives 61.5%, his PPG on drives is 8.3. Harden FG on drives is 72.7% his PPG on drives is 8.3. Meanwhile..... Monta Ellis FG on drives 46.2%, PPG on drives is 8.7. So basically, Lin and Harden are driving well, while Monta still has it all
That's actually surprising to me, he's shooting a lot worse on the same number of drives but he ends up with more PPG. It's probably because of shooting fouls? Lin and Monta have both drawn 6 fouls per game, while Harden has drawn 6.7, but Monta is averaging 7 of 8 from the line a game, while Harden and Lin have been less efficient from the line.
Jeremy being VERY aggressive thus far. Also not surprisingly, the guy he replaced is also killing it.
