GmScr is short for Game Score, and formula that John Hollinger came up with way back when he was writing his annual Basketball Forecast books. The formula was designed to rate a player's statistical performance in a game. I use it here as a basic player rating statistic -- like a simplified version of PER. The used_poss column is essentially the same as Hollinger's Usage Rate statistic, except its not pace-adjusted (which isn't really necessary if you're just comparing players on the same team). It more or less reflects each player's usage.
Thanks. Last season Harden's USG% was 29. So 27 ppg on 23.6 is pretty damn insane. Obviously there is a limited size bias, but still fun to dream about him doing it for a full 82 game season.
I am incredibly well versed in advanced stats, but you have shown me that I still have a lot to learn. Thank you.
I love our offense. Score fast as hell and if that doesn't work and we get into half court offense we just feed Dwight.. Great ****
So used_poss isn't the same as Usg% (from basketball-reference.com), so that wouldn't be an apples-to-apples comparison. Here is Usg% for the first 3 preseason games (hoping I calculated it correctly, did it kind of fast): Code: Player USG% James Harden 27.0% Chandler Parsons 17.6% Terrence Jones 14.5% Jeremy Lin 20.5% Dwight Howard 29.2% Patrick Beverley 11.7% Omri Casspi 22.1% Donatas Motiejunas 21.3% Ronnie Brewer 7.4% Aaron Brooks 20.2% Robert Covington 25.3% Francisco Garcia 25.9% Isaiah Canaan 14.7% Greg Smith 44.1%
What's the formula for USG%? And overall difference? USG% is the amount of plays used by a player. I guess whats the difference between USG% and Usage Rate if used_poss is a slightly simpler version of that.
Rockets.com doesn't include last year's preseason stats for players who weren't on the roster in the regular season (e.g. Kevin Martin), but here are the rest: Code: Per 36 Minutes ------------------------------------------------------ Player G mpg pts reb ast stl blk tov used_poss* GmScr* TS% Omer Asik 7 25.4 10.9 16.4 2.8 1.2 1.0 3.0 14.5 12.3 0.517 Chandler Parsons 7 24.4 16.4 5.1 3.6 1.7 0.2 2.5 18.6 11.8 0.552 Carlos Delfino 7 21.7 17.8 4.3 2.6 0.9 0.2 0.7 15.8 13.8 0.625 Jeremy Lin 6 25.3 9.0 3.3 8.5 3.3 0.5 3.6 18.8 8.2 0.361 Terrence Jones 6 24.8 15.2 7.2 1.2 0.7 1.7 2.2 17.3 11.2 0.517 Donatas Motiejunas 6 18.8 18.8 8.3 1.3 0.0 1.0 1.6 18.9 11.9 0.555 Greg Smith 4 14.0 23.1 6.4 0.6 3.2 0.0 1.3 14.8 22.0 0.869 Royce White 4 12.3 6.6 4.4 2.9 0.0 1.5 4.4 15.1 -1.7 0.341 * used_poss = fga + 0.44*fta + 0.33*ast + tov * GmScr = pts + 0.4*fg - 0.7*fga - 0.4*(fta-ftm) + 0.7*orb + 0.3*drb + stl + 0.7*ast + 0.7*blk - 0.4*pf - tov Check out basketball-reference.com's glossary for its Usg% formula: http://www.basketball-reference.com/about/glossary.html Basically, it defines Usg% as the percentage of a team's plays that are accounted for by a player when he's on the floor, where number of plays is given by FGA + 0.44*FTA + TOV. Note that it does not factor in assists at all. Hollinger's Usage Rate can be described as "number of possessions used by a player per 40 minutes, pace-adjusted" where number of used possessions is given by FGA+0.44*FTA+0.33*AST+TOV.
So would I, but PER isn't very fun to calculate. GmScr is a pretty decent proxy for PER in terms of relative ratings.
One interesting thing I see is, Jones has high mpg but low usage rate. At least from just these numbers, DMo is ahead of Jones by quite a bit, and DMo plays about 1/3 less than Jones. That means they are giving Jones every opportunity to prove his worth.
I completely agree. It is like the coaching staff has already decided on the issue, and are just attempting to validate their decision. A smart move. Euroleague seems to have helped D-Mo a lot. He no longer looks soft. But it is preseason and we shall see.
Impressive rebounder and shot blocker. Decent defender but short, and so guys often just shoot over him. Doesn't space the floor well and hits his free throws only sometimes. Not a great passer: doesn't facilitate Dwight. Didn't Jones have a couple 20 point games last preseason?
Interesting facts Opponents leads in: less Turnovers 17 to 18.67 less Personal fouls : 26.33 to 29.33 and they block more shots: 6.67 to 6.33 We are leading in everything else in 3 games.
Bench Harden!!! Kidding, kidding. The stats that most impress me are the team rebOunds, blocks and assists!
Good thing Parson's starting spot is secure because Casspi is putting up video game numbers. Lin is approaching Linsanity numbers in scoring. In 2011-12 in New York, his Per 36 scoring number was 19.6. Right now it's, what, 19.7? Last year's Lin's preseason scoring number was 9.0, so I guess it's fairly clear he's much healthier this season without the knee issue. I think Lin went a long way to retaining his starting position based upon how he and Patrick played in Taiwan. Not just because Lin did well, but also because Patrick was able to do so well leading the bench. If Patrick wants the starting spot, I think he is going to have to finish strong. Last game, Lin's game efficiency number (similar to Game Score) was 22 while Beverley's was 9. Granted, Lin played 13 more minutes (35 to 22) than Beverley did. However, if Lin continues putting up like 17/2/4 and Beverley continues putting up like 2/2/5, I have a hard time thinking Lin will lose his starter role. Especially as Harden seems to be able to perform well with Lin in the starting lineup. And as Beverley showed he could excel with the bench yesterday, as a facilitator. Should be an interesting final 4 games of the preseason. Bring it on!
