Yeah I still remember I was going to see him on July 8th at Brazos Book Store in the Village. He canceled 6 days before with his cancer diagnosis.
It's fantastic. Very eye-opening. By now, Hitchens has probably talked God into doubting his own existence.
Haven't seen anybody stare eternity in the face and not blink such as this man. RIP. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/QbBVB66DC5k" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Neil deGrasse Tyson "Gone too Soon: Christopher Hitchens 62. Tireless supporter of human rights and fighter of dogma under any guise"
I read it the other way. And it was just as plausible . If there's a lot of thunder over the next few days, I suspect we're just hearing the fallout of their meeting upstairs.
How is it just as plausible? God: Why didn't you believe in me, man? Hitch: Because there was NO evidence. Hmmmmm... how much more of an earful could god have given him? In the reverse scenario, Hitch would certainly have plenty of issues to say to God.
speaking for myself, i don't think that non-belief in a deity necessarily translates into disbelief in an afterlife of some sort.
Hitchens is a classic case of someone who thought he was too smart for religion. What arrogance and ignorance. No believing Christian will tell you that he is in Heaven today.
So his crime was being too intelligent? In thinking too much? This was exactly his point: he believed (and made a very strong argument that) religion requires that one surrender their higher thinking, their critical faculties, in favor of blind obedience and "faith", and therefore must be viewed as a negative for humanity as a whole, not a positive. Our minds are our greatest tool, our greatest asset. To suppress the use of the mind in favor of dogmatic belief is a dangerous and toxic scenario.
He was too smart for religion, and there's nothing arrogant or ignorant about that. Nice "no true Scotsman" fallacy there, by the way.
Jeez, it's not like he killed someone, molested children, or talked in the theater. The special hell.
You can still go to Heaven if you do those things ... you just have to believe that Jesus died for your sins. It's a pretty great deal. You can basically do whatever the **** you want.
