Chad Ford Draft Buzz: Cavs trying to get a third lottery pick. Offering to take back a bad deal. Kings & Pistons are targets.
That big trade exception coming back for any team that is willing to deal with the Cavs would look pretty nice for a team like Detroit.
Cavs have a $14.5 million trade exception - so they can take on a bad salary such as Hamilton, Villanueva, or Garcia. http://espn.go.com/blog/truehoop/post/_/id/30688/sources-cavs-seeking-third-lottery-pick
I think it's more of "if we can get 3 of the top 10 players in ANY draft, we're bound to get at least ONE right!" thinking. I mean, yes, getting Irving, TThompson, and a Euro Center TBD would start the rebuilding process real quick for Cleveland, but just having one out of the three pan out as a perennial All-Star would still be a success for the Cavs.
Or they are just desperate to show their fans that they are doing everything they can to rebuild their team, after last year's fiasco. If I was cleveland, try to get another top 10 pick and somehow flip it to a top 5 pick for next year (if that is possible). Or just stink it up again and stay in the lottery for next year.
irving, and either jonas V or Kanter with the #4 then they'll probably try for leonard or klay thompson with the #7 or #8 to sort of balance out the roster
I like it... 1 out 3 for a Superstar is what these Rockets need to try... If not this year then next.
I wouldn't be surprised to see them draft Irving and then both Kanter and Jonas, if possible. I think both bigs can play 4 or 5.
This ain't gonna happen. Imagine you are one of those teams. You are already struggling in terms of wins, and probably in terms of fan interest. This is the one night to get your fans excited about next year. You probably organized a draft watching party at a local venue to pump up fan morale and hopefully sell some tickets. And you tell these fans, who are looking to see which young lotto talent you are gonna end up with that you are drafting.... NOBODY! Yea! But your owner sure saved a bunch of cash. Yeah. That'll work.
money saved from getting rid of a bad contract= money from ticket sales (a penny saved is a penny earned) especially if the 2011 season tickets are already sold You could sell it to your fans as positioning for 2012... how many here already want the Rox to tank '11
but the Cavs would more than likely move there 2nd round picks #32 & 57 in any deal they do to move back ino the top 10
If Detroit can unload Vilanueva and Maxiell then they should do it. Cavs could throw in Hickson and Sessions in return as well. The fans can still have plenty to look forward to - additional cap space, trading Hamilton, they will have Jerebko back, he filled in very well for Prince before getting injured himself. Plus they might be able to find something decent with the 33rd pick. Stuckey/Bynum Gordon/?????? Jerebko/Jerebko Hickson/?????? Monroe/Wallace This is not a bad young core. They will have nice spending money in 2012 FA and another top 10 lottery pick.
Can't see another team biting on this. Most teams in the lottery, even in this lottery, reeeeally need to improve. Although there are probably no true stars in this draft (Irving, Williams, Valancuinas potential notwithstanding), you have enough talent there to improve the team. I understand the Cavs' thinking, obviously. They did this with the Clippers and it got them the #1 pick.
