The UK is not a good measure to compare with though.

I can bet that the UK will be one of the hardest hit countries in Europe.

The NHS is almost bankrupt and there is severe lack of doctors and nurses even in good times. The brits have to wait one of the longest time in western Europe to see a doctor.
Also The government has taken very few preventive measures , they still havent even banned football games, closed schools and they dont do many tests.
The problem is so big that they are already planning on volunteers from now. The **** will hit the fan.
You can say that Italy, especially northern Italy has a better kept healthcare system than the UK. The NHS has a good reputation but it is only based in the past.

On top of it there is proof that the virus survives and spreads much easier in colder climates..like GB.

It has all the signs of a catastrophe written over it.
I hope I am proven wrong.

The one to compare with is France not the UK.
France has one of the best healthcare systems in the world.

Anyway for everyone the important thing to do now is to use the time that China and Italy has bought us and try to get through this.

People aren't dying from this because they aren't getting the right kind of care in hospitals - they are dying because there is no real treatment except ventilation. I repeat - there is no treatment. All that can be done is to provide fluids and ventilation.

The great flaw of our system is that sick people will not get tested or consult health care professionals because they do not want to end up in a hospital and have a hospital bill that will break their back. Considering people commit suicide over debt it's not an irrational decision to avoid going in.

What this means is that the number of cases in the US will likely be severely underreported.

Those are hospital beds, not ICU capacity.

    Yeah no.

The quality of care certainly has an impact on the death rate from the virus (as do other factors).

I do not doubt that the number of people that are infected will not be known and just like there are inherent advantages to the US system I agree with you that there are also disadvantages and that carries over to US culture as well.

Apparently Trump has been keeping all the discussions about Coronavirus CLASSIFIED? Why on earth is this classified?

Can you articulate how the US superior quality of care actually makes a difference in treating severe cases of the coronavirus?

The hospital beds number tells that USA is not vastly better than the rest of the world in the battle against the virus. In fact, it is worse than most of the countries.

This coronavirus is a bomb. You need HUGE number of hospital beds in short time to reduce the chance that people even going into ICU. .. The ICU will not function anyway when you do not have enough medical staff and resource during the virus bombing time. ICU can save the lives of Trumps, not hundreds of ordinary people who cannot afford $10K per day.

Trump just said that “we are having to fix a problem that four weeks ago nobody ever thought would be a problem.” “This came out of nowhere.”

Well, that says it all. Four weeks ago this wasn’t even on their radar. Really?

Most of us have been watching this unfold for at least two months. Just unbelievable.

And now republicans are in a big snit because people have the nerve to ask why our Gov’t wasn’t more prepared.

First off, ICU care is quite different than simply having hospital beds which apparently you do not understand.

Second, there are already measures in place that are available to be used politically such as the Disaster Recovery Program that would pay hospitals for treating all under or uninsured people. It has been discussed for almost two weeks now.

He needs to resign. Take his pardon, resign. This is too dangerous.

He will not resign and we both know it.

He has however drawn his line in the sand and he will be held accountable in November if the outbreak and consequences are really bad in the US.

And yet they are deliberating and putting classified labels on their conversation, while excluding their own experts. Goes to show you that they are abusing power once again at the worst time.

Yup, they have already gone 75%, they should go ahead and go 100% at this point.

I am surprised they can fine people to work at the grocery stores and pharmacies.

    I noticed this too here.
Suddendly from yesterday where only schools were closed now they are sending sms to all citizens to stay inside and be careful, the prime minister gives public speeches, doubing the ICU beds and hiring thousands of doctors and nurses and they are closing down most hobby activities.

Do you think that maybe there are new data that governments know and haven't been published yet? For example new information about how contagious this is, or a new mutation.
    Tin foil hat?

It is just a very stark difference from one day to the next.

Not trying to split hairs, but that essentially is the treatment. In fact , that's the case for almost any viral illness you get. Treatment is there, but cures for viruses are hard to come by. Tamiflu needs like < 3 days of onset but even then it basically only lessens the severity, not the length. The treatment is "supportive care" or basically doing the things your body is already doing, but more. Like fluids, oxygen etc...
