If we have $5,000,000 of space, we can take on a player making up to that amount of money in exchange for a draft pick (2nd rounders, I guess), and maybe some cash (although for the latter, we are talking about Tilman Fertitta).

The Rockets have several back up deals if they want to go that route.

They are trying to get a better deal or two.

    Ros,
I appreciate your perspective, but I just thought we could get more for our best available trade chip. I like Roco and he fills a hole we've had since Ariza left for a long 3/D player, but Capela is arguably one of the best young centers in the league. Yes, he's very limited offensively, but the cap space is just that until someone useful fills it--that's why I framed my comments as I did. I'd be ecstatic if Bell can be 60-70% of what PJ brings to the team, but the light bulb hasn't clicked on for him--he reminds me a bit of Thomas Robinson who was athletic and jacked, but never put it all together.

We need an enforcer to battle bigger teams in the play-offs. I'd love Baynes, he'd bring that toughness and size we could use underneath and he's got a more well-rounded offensive game.

It’s not cap space. It’s space available in the trade and away from the luxury tax. So if one of the teams involved in the trade are willing to give up someone then sure. (Yay for Len?) But it’s not like we can simply reach out to any team we like and take a $5million player. We’re all out of incentives!

There’s no such thing as a back up deal. A team may say we will give you this guy if nothing better comes up, but absolutely do not have to stand by that word, nor is there a guarantee something better won’t come up.

There are such things as potentially suboptimal deals. You do these deals when the "potential" part is proven to be impossible.

Suboptimal options and "nothing up in his sleeve" are very different things imo.

Can you guys at least wait until tomorrow afternoon to pass judgement? So quick to run in here and say everything that sucks and blame Morey and Tilman when you have no clue what other moves are going to be made between tomorrow and the buy out market that will shape this team. Morey will not leave this team without a C or other F options after moving Clint. Have a little patience and see what else happens. SMH

What if I told you Mark Berman was first to greet Covington at the airport?

They have space under the Luxury Tax Line.

They don't have space below the salary cap.

They cant just go out and sign someone for the amount between their current sum and the Tax Line ($5,838,621) because they are over the cap.

All they can do is offer free agents (that's what a buy out guy is) the minimum (Prorated) OR whatever they have left of the MLE (Prorated).

Currently they have $1,614,653 remaining of the MLE while a minimum contract is $1,620,564.

They have no advantage in the buy out market.

    Now .... Trades

You have no salary to send out for matching purposes after sending out Nene and GG who combined would have allowed you to bring in $5,331,646.

Salary matching is no longer an option for any figure above $4,051,410.

    They will have multiple TPE's , $3,620,016 (Brandon Knight) , $3,595,333 (Clint Capela) & $3,206,160‬ (Marquis Chriss).

Keep in mind that these TPE's CAN NOT be combined.

That means any player they acquire via trade will have to earn less than $3,620,016 without combining the salaries of two or more players and the only two you have that are expendable are Chandler and Sefolosha who both earn the minimum of $1,620,564.
Those two combined allow you a return salary of $4,051,410.

Those numbers change some if you add one of House , McLemore or Rivers to the equation .... but do you really want to move any of the above ?

$1,620,054 is all they can offer a buy out.
$3,620,016 via trade into a TPE
$4,051,410 via trade sending out Chandler and Sefolosha.

those are minimum contracts...they should not add up to requiring a 1st round pick to dump

    NO.

    No we cant

They are over the cap and can only take in 125% +100k what they send out OR what they can absorb into a TPE.

See this post for what they can do -

The Covington deal hasn’t been executed yet. In theory, Houston could take on $5 MM in salary from another team, and roll that into the original deal
