i think the push from ash will be a move to Rugby style tackling which they can practice without hurting guys.
Anwar is reporting that current Baylor DL coach and former longhorn Frank Okam is a candidate for Ash's staff but it depends where they land on current DL coach Oscar Giles. Okam spent the past two seasons coaching Baylor’s defensive line. Prior to Baylor, Okam coached at Rice. Ash could have dedicated coaches for the interior DL and a separate coach for defensive ends. In addition to Giles, CB coach Jason Washington, S coach Craig Naivar and interim linebackers coach Jeremiah George will all interview with Ash this week to keep their jobs. Washington is also the Recruiting Coordinator. Pay sites are also reporting interest with CB- Jay Valai (Rutgers), Cory Robinson (Maryland) and Kerry Coombs (Titans) DL- Eric Henderson (Rams) Would love to get Coombs
Nice to see confirmation that Cosmi is coming back. I would guess Kerstetter moves to center next year to replace Shack. That would give us holes to fill at left guard and right tackle.
Reading Coombs is the favorite for the Ohio State DC gig. Herman said he’d like to split the 10 assistant coaches even across the offense and defense which indicates he’d like to split DL duties. I’d be really happy with Okam and Giles. Really interested in seeing the CB and LB hires. Washington is as good as a recruiters we’ve seen but our CB play was just so bad. Difficult to say how much was due to scheme.
Naivar isn’t a surprise with Ash coaching safeties himself. But if the smoke on Drayton is real, wouldn’t be surprised if Washington is kept around. One really shouldn’t effect the other and maybe it won’t but don’t think Herman was expecting to turnover his entire year one staff outside of Giles.
Meeting with the Cowboys today apparently. Edit: Chip Brown reporting Drayton has offers from the Rams and Cowboys. Hope Herman has a contingency plan.
Washington was listed as the "recruiting coordinator." How does that differ from Bryan Carrington being "Director of Recruiting"? Valai doesn't seem to have much experience but maybe Ash knows he's a good technical teacher.
Sure the former is just a title for salary justification, like Stan Drayton having an Assistant Head Coach title. Doesn't really change their duties much, if at all IMO. Won't pretend that I know much or anything about Valai but reading how much Ash's defense relies on secondary play (and obviously playing in the Big 12), this might be the most important assistant hire Herman makes.
