It is a consequence of his mistake - it is ok to feel how he does but as a representative of the Rockets he has to be smarter than to post about it - that was fundamentally unintelligent. DD
It's a consequence of Stern, Silver, and the NBA getting involved with the irrational and unreliable Chinese.
Whole thing is about the trade negotiations. China will offer to restore the nba in exchange for Huawei concessions or a delay in tariffs. So what comes out of today’s or tomorrow’s negotiation will have material impact on the nba.
fwiw: here's a link to "back of napkin" calculations on losses to owners per year. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/index.php...apped-out-anyways.301626/page-2#post-12635189 Using the 10% Salary Cap reduction number, Tilman loses ~ $15m/yr*. But he gains significant BBall advantage against teams who rely on Salary Cap being high. * probably slightly more than that, because owners get to keep 50% of signage revenue, and we probably have some of that from China....(not to be confused with sponsorships and promotions revenue which are 100% counted in BRI). Also fwiw, due to sports betting opening up, Tilman has Rockets Revenue growth potential with casino revenue being a 100% keep if he (or Team) owns the gambling business.
I had the same thought, and it's a good point. But now, they'll be asked about it. They're already being asked about it. And progressive groups (and conservative groups for that matter) will be putting pressure on them to "take a stand" and so forth. "Think of the Uighars" and so on, even though NBA players probably had no idea about these people in the past.
He did apologize. China doesn't care about that, they want him to say that Hong Kong is part of China and he was sorry for thinking otherwise.
This is a clash of values. One country where your opinions are your own and in another where your opinions represent the entire entity you belong to. Morey can not resign as it would be an admission that Americans are not allowed to have free speech when they deal with the Chinese. That Chinese values trump American values even in America. It's unfortunate that China was offended. But what they are doing...to punish an entire sport for one political tweet of one person is absurd. China is out of line here and we can't give in.
Yep. Doing business with unreliable partners is the root of all this mess. If it wasn't Morey, it would have been someone else. Some dumbass like Draymond Green would have answered a political question after a Warrior exhibition game in China and you'd have gotten this same result. This was going to happen eventually. Like @napalm06 said: Don't stick your dick in crazy.
You are dealing with Xi only who wants to be the president forever, there is nothing to do with Chinese people. Xi feels so insecure for everything since he will be in jail without a power. Hong Kong is a big issue for Xi too. Morey may want to be fired by saying this kind of thing first if he wants to move on?
This. Or Saltgrass Steakhouses throughout China. All of which had to be in Fertitta's backers' heads when they dropped 2.2 billion to buy a basketball team, and none of which is a possibility right now. I think if Morey resigns, he doesn't come back to the NBA, but jumps into e-sports completely. Though not for Blizzard, LOL. I think there is considerable pressure within the NBA's management structure to keep him though, at least for part of this season. The NBA does not want China to think that it has absolute veto power over how the NBA conducts business operations. Admitting that would be a large handicap for the NBA in future negotiations with China. Moreover, as another poster pointed out, it's not like this is going to be the last time someone, probably a player, pokes China's hot buttons with social media. The NBA does not want to alter its basketball operations or look like it's restricting free speech anymore than it already does. Pushing the Rockets to get rid of Morey sets a precedent, that China will expect to be followed if, say, Pop or Kerr, or Giannis decide to start talking about, e.g., Uighur re-education camps on social media.
Your reaction is little naive. You believe everything in China is being controlled by the party and no individual freedom in China, right. You know the person who attended the NBA game in China with “support Hong Kong sign”? He wasn’t executed like many believed he was. He was asked twice by the security guards to take the sign down, when he refused he was sentenced to 15 days in jail. Not concentration camp as some assumed. Is 15 days too much? One can make an argument, but my point is the reality and assumption are not the same.
You are incorrect. The issue has die down in the last day and now is being controlled by those who wants to use this to advance their own agenda. It’s preseason NBA, China made its stand and some businesses are using this to promote or leverage a better deal. It’s all part of the business world.
Are you really asking if 15 days are too much jail time for a person holding up a sign? And you want people to take you seriously? But at least he was not executed, amirite?
Now they are asked about it, and they still are clearly and firmly dodging it. Harden, Silver, Kerr, Pop, non of them said anything.... Is Morey the only one.....in decades? The assumption that if it was not Morey, someone else will do it seems very wrong.
Agreed. Can’t there just be 1 China thread stickied to the top where all this crap can go instead of essentially the entire front page being different China takes threads?
The reason I think Morey could possibly resign, is he may be ostracized by the rest of the NBA. If this ends up costing owners and players millions or billions, I could see Morey getting the cold shoulder from the rest of the NBA. Morey has enjoyed being the the well known GM that goes on talk shows, gives interviews, and is just very outspoken. Morey is now going to be known as the GM that traded for James Harden, and the GM that created an international controversy. He may end up being more popular to many Americans. But, NBA owners and players will probably never forgive him if he costs them millions or billions.
How am I incorrect? This is literally his apology... This is an apology, fully, he even said he's willing to consider other viewpoints...but what China wants is not that, they want full submission in the apology and it seems to me they want him to say something specific (and Silver too) which is probably along the lines that Hong Kong is part of China. If Silver and Morey say that this blows over instantly, but it's important that they do not, because this is what Free Speech is. He has already apologized, fully. You are incorrect. The tweet above proves that. He apologized.
