They can be mutually exclusive ideas. We all (well, most of us) watched the Astros in the late 90s/early 00s deal prospects and throw bad money at free agents, which cost us draft picks and/or impaired our ability to sign draft picks. Years later, they were losing 400+ games over a four-year stretch. This isn't hard. You maximize your present, sure - but you also have to patiently weigh the urgency to do so. I don't care if every team but the Astros address a weakness today - the Astros are *still* the best team in baseball. If fans are disappointed, it's because they don't know any better.
Holding Wheeler makes plenty of sense for the Mets. He is a qualifying offer candidate. He hasn't had a great year and might take the QO. Especially considering if he stays with the Mets he won't get a chance to showcase himself in the playoffs like Eovaldi did last year. Not sure another team will pay 15 million per year plus lose a draft pick for Wheeler. Mets could roll out DeGrom, Syndergaard, Stroman, and Wheeler next year. That is legit and a better rotation than we will likely have next season.
The Mets have a good roster and aren’t set up to rebuild. QO’ing Wheeler is a fine backup plan for them.
As long as the Yankees and Dodgers do not make any big moves, us not making a big one doesn't make as big a difference. We already addressed catcher. Another pen arm would be great but costs are supposedly high.
Looks like an overpay situation for Wheeler. Not feeling it if that’s the case. May be best to just roll with what we’ve got, maybe pick up a reliever instead.
His ERA sucks but his underlying numbers are solid and I would assume most FOs are smart enough now to recognize that. I mean, he's still going to be a 4 WAR player. Would be kind of surprising to see him take a QO.
12 minutes... We can win with Verlander, Cole, Miley, Peacock healthy. Would like to have had a solid 5 starters going into the playoffs to take heat off a tired bullpen. 11 minutes....
I don't disagree with you, but this doesn't apply to this particular Cubs team. Ehh it depends. If the Yankees added a #2 starter, then I wouldn't agree with you.... it is all dependent on moves. Oh please. If the teams competing against the Astros all made major moves, and the Astros failed to make any moves, the fans would be justified in being upset.
