well, we don't have any starting pitching depth. there's a 100% chance they trade for somebody today.
Mets must have been in a position where they were only willing to trade Thor if someone over paid. Different situation entirely with Wheeler though.
I think they need help getting this across the regular season finish line, for sure. Once the playoffs start, however, they will be much-better situated this year than they were in 2017, IMO - even if they stay pat. I think they would enter the postseason supremely confident in their 1-3 starters and the back-end of their bullpen. And their ability to plug a variety of solid pitchers into a variety postseason situations.
Similar to Bumgarner, they can QO Wheeler and get a draft pick (assuming he stays healthy and pitches well for the rest of this season). They don’t have to give him away for nothing. But I agree, they are much more motivated to trade him and it’s very likely teams are offering more than the QO comp pick value.
yup, definitely don't need one for playoffs, barring injury. but definitely need one for insurance in case one of the 3 gets hurt. and like you said, to get through regular season, and i know it doesn't matter as much in baseball, but why not get as many home fields as we can? never had best record in baseball before and it's sitting there for the taking. Also, we are effectively adding a postseason bullpen option with any starting pitching addition we make. i'm expecting us to add 2 starters today, a decent one and one purely for depth, so nobody else outside of urquidy has to start a game again this season.
I would be pretty stoked; he'd be an incredible weapon out of the pen this October & then you hand him to Strom this winter and let him go to work on the walks.
Wish we’d just given Charlie the 2/30mil. Let’s get him back! If we could get Robbie Ray, could you imagine what the rotation could’ve looked like... JV Cole Ray Morton Miley
