This is going to be an extremely grim time period for the Rockets. If he is going to try to run the team as a business he will be looking at ROI, the biggest issue here is that he purchased at an all time high ($2.2B). This was not an all cash deal, and you have to assume his debt service is significant, another massive issue. Jordan buying the Bobcats sub $600M was incredible timing, that is how you buy a team for investment. You don't buy an NBA team to generate significant operating profits, you buy a team and cash out over time on the excessive valuation you receive when you sell it. These teams sell at absurd multiples, and hence they are rich man's trophy, not a man's way to immediate wealth. The good news is when there is a downturn, Tilman's investments are not hedged against a recession and he will be forced to sell the team. The best case scenario is a PE buyout with solid leadership similar to the Astros. I say extremely grim because it will be about 3-5 years of Tilman destroying value, and then another 5-7 years of some value investors tanking to build the next super team. The only way this timeline becomes shorter is getting lucky in the draft with a top pick on a generational talent.
So true. If Harden was hurt this season for stretches of games.....the Rockets would have missed the playoffs. Harden carried the Rockets and casts D’Antoni in a better light.
Tilman is hurting though money wise. Has more money than any of us but he isn’t what he was ever since he spent all of his money to buy the team. Him not wanting to spend on players and low balling the best coach we’ve had in a very long time should be telling enough.
Who the hell is "Landry's Locker?" Genuinely curious. Is the cat an ex-Landry's night manager or something?
Career, Mda is 8th best playoff coach in the western conference, but he is worth 5 million a year, not 2.5.
Anyone think they are trying to get MDA to resign like he did with the Lakers and New York? Maybe they'll have to pay MDA less if he resigns vs getting fired?
They almost missed the playoffs with James harden the season before they got MDA. MDA is probably one of the most influential coaches in the last decade. Everyone in the NBA plays a version of his pace and space small ball offense..
True, but D’Antoni has never been past a WCF’s. In the past he has played a form of “Small-Ball” to win 60 games in the regular season.....only to flame-out in the post season. A’Mare Stoudamire at center— our Capela Matrix at PF— our Tucker and Guards Teams have learned to run segments of D’Antoni offense using SF’s predominantly and winning the whole thing. Warriors run segments of “Princeton” “Triangle” “7 seconds or less (D’Antoni Offense)” with predominantly SF’s and win it all. Edited: I believe Kevin McHale took the Rockets to the WCF in 14/15.....no one in clamoring for him to come back
Tilman worries about this. If mid season is on pace of 41 wins, he has to pay 2 head coaches at 10 mil. 41 wins is lotto. It could be crazy for him to pay somebody who is not generate playoff wins. What the hell is this business?
the only one that can save this team is James. he needs to pull a LeBron and start acting as the GM. tell Tilman to spend or trade him.
