At the end, regardless of his weight, he may just not be a very good MLB hitter. It would be one thing if he was having major success... while fat... plenty of great players have accomplished this. It would be another if he had a stellar track record, became fat, then started struggling. Right now, he was below average... and remains below average. Of course getting more fat is a big problem, but I don't know what Tyler White's true baseline really is.
Oh, I found it. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/index.php?threads/official-astros-mariners.293049/page-19 @Nook @leroy should be outraged by this thread!
He has such crazily inconsistent stretches that I don't know how a team could ever really count on him. Like last year, he was awful in his first call up, gets sent down, comes back and is great for a month, good for a couple of weeks, then vanishes the last 2 weeks and outside of Game 1 vs Cleveland was a zero in the playoffs. '17 he was very good in his first short run with the team, then does nothing in September. '16 he was a total disaster for 200 ABs after his hot start. Fun facts: 14 MLB pitchers are have as many or more RBI as White. 5 SPs have a higher OPS. Greinke has more XBH.
He probably is but people would still be have told HTM and the OP to shut up had he posted this with White performing. My point was HTM got bashed last year for complaining about him being fat because White was hitting. Now that he isn’t everyone wants to bash White for being fat. Whether he is hitting or not, it’s ridiculous that is looks like he does.
Well, I was called out by HTM about that from last year and I hadn't even posted in this thread until today. I honestly don't care if he's a little overweight. If he's not hitting, he's not hitting. I don't believe it's because of his weight...which I don't think is appreciably different that it was last season. I think he's just not hitting. Fans always have to come up with reasons as if they are in the clubhouse and in the cages with these guys. Like the thread opining on if Altuve is being affected by what's going on in Venezuela...as if it was some new occurrence. White didn't get big in March. He looks the same to me as he did when he was a rookie and won AL Player of the Week. Aside from the fact that baseball history is littered with overweight players, it's only a problem for you people because he's not hitting.
Why is it so difficult to understand that he is noticeably fatter this year than he was last year? Exhibit A & B: Tyler White last August 29 He's never going to be a thin guy with abs, but it can't be helpful to be in the shape he's in now (walkoff video added for karmic motivation purposes)
Ehhh I didn’t really consider him especially fat last year. He is noticeably fatter this year and it is really disheartening because his strongest attribute has always been makeup and work ethic. Also, you can weight 280 lbs if you post close to a 900 OPS. If you produce, you will get a pass on being heavier. It is just a fact. When you are not producing and are fat.. well there is going to be criticism. White reminds me of Ensberg. Both those guys were praised for their intelligence and make up. Both had their moments.
Then how the hell have you survived living in Texas? Have you looked around? Three bills is the norm.
Yeah, I don't think its for a lack of playing time at this point. He's had opportunities. He gets AB's. He's had success, but he can't sustain much... unfortunately, as being simply a hitter that can't do much else, he needs to hit consistently to stick.
Ensberg finishing 4th in MVP and being an all-star would be more than just "having moments".... I'd kill for White to have anything close to an Ensberg-like career.
I’m not arguing he isn’t fatter...I’m saying this thread would either not exist or people would still be saying to shut up if White was hitting .300 with 10 bombs...
