If you've had this I'm sure you know what I'm talking about. It's like a sharp pain in both sides of your jaw after drinking the smallest amount of alcohol. Has anyone else experienced this? This has happened the past 2 times I've drank, however, it has never happened before those past 2 times. I'm not sure if it has to do with the quality of alcohol or what but I've googled about it and alot of people have had similar problems but no definite answers.
I know what you are talking about. Its sharp pain, but not in your jaw but the side of your cheeks. Annoying as hell.
Something in the liquor is irritating your parotid duct if the pain is in your cheeks. Can you think of anything else that might cause similar sensations in your jaw/mouth?
Azadre - not sure how immediately but it does happen within 5-10 minutes and definitely by the time I was finished with my margarita. Other things I could think of that may create a similar pain is if you were eating something extremely sour like a lemon?
It's possible it's the acidity irritating your mucosal lining. Does it only happen with margaritas (tequila)?
Funny this got mentioned...I always thought it only happened to me. I take a small sip of beer and boom, I feel the pain on both sides (sometimes only one side). Oddly enough, through dental school, I asked maybe 15 instructors and none of them knew what I was talking about. I even read through some random chapters in my text books and couldnt find anything. Maybe I should try google. Edit: Seems to be a backflow of the alcohol or anything acidic through the duct of the parotid gland. Usually you dont get a backflow, but sometimes you do and that may be the cause of the sharp pain. Although, in my case, I feel like there really isnt enough of the alcohol for the backflow to occur...plus, it happens almost upon contact...i'll have to pay closer attention next time.
Is this after you wake up from blacking out? Next time, don't drink so much. You just lost a bar fight.
happens to me with some foods... salty foods I've come to believe... but it happens only at the first taste of whatever it is. After that I'm good immediately.
I’m bringing this thread from the dead. I’m at the Astros game and this shiner is killing my jaw. It’s happened to me before. Not a consistent type of drink but it’s almost always alcohol.Google says it’s the acid like you guys are saying. I saw this thread after googling and had to revive it lol.
