[Shams] Memphis close to trading Gasol to Charlotte

I can't tell if strong talks means close or not. But hey, good for Charlotte depending on the price tag.

This is the kind of move the Hornets should be making with their current roster. Shows Kemba they are serious about winning and possibly improves their odds of keeping him as a free agent this summer. They also aren’t going to be under the cap any time soon, regardless of Kemba’s decision this summer.

Gasol isn't good enough to help Charlotte over the MIL/TOR/PHI/BOS tier, but his presence means Charlotte won't bottom out. So basically, they're stuck in mediocrity until Gasol's contract expires after next season.

And Kemba is about to be paid after this season. Probably a max deal, from either Charlotte or another suitor. If Charlotte resigns him, they're still going to be mediocre. If Charlotte lets him go, they're still going to be mediocre.

I don't get it.

Without Kemba or Lamb, the Hornets have 102.5 million committed to the rest of their roster next season, and the cap is expected to be 109 million. Also, the Hornets want to keep Kemba, who has made it clear he likes Charlotte and wants to stay. Getting a player of Gasol’s caliber only helps make the team more desirable in Kemba’s eyes, and it’s unlikely they are giving up a great asset for him. Gasol’s contract also expires after next season, when the majority of Charlotte’s bad contracts come off the books.

 

According to what I could find, the Hornets have yet to offer Kemba the max.

 

He is getting traded out of Memphis. Of course he is going to be in good spirits.
