It’s not that. I just think they’ll try the other guys first and they’ll keep Peacock in the pen. Losing McHugh to the rotation leaves Peacock as the only proven reliable multi inning reliever.
First 3 are good RP but all averaged less than an inning per appearance so they’re not consistent multi inning options. Valdez is a rookie.
Back to fantasy land: Sign Grandal Trade Bukauskas, White, Kemp, Stassi, and Toro for Greinke and $21M Sign Justin Wilson CF Springer DH Brantley 3B Bregman 2B Altuve C Grandal SS Correa LF Reddick 1B Gurriel RF Tucker Bench: Diaz, Chirinos, Marisnick Rotation: Verlander, Cole, Greinke, McHugh, Whitley Bullpen: Peacock, Devenski, Wilson, Harris, Smith, Rondon, Pressly, Osuna Optioned: Stubbs, Reed, Davis, Fisher, Straw, James, Armenteros, F Valdez, C Perez, Rodgers, Martes, Guduan, Deetz, Abreu, McCullers I just realized...they can option McCullers instead of 60 Day DL him and get another year of control, right?!?!? Huge boon for Houston if so.
Interesting... Peacock has more success as a starter in the majors than ALL of the names you mentioned combined. If we trade for or sign another starter I would actually prefer Peacock in the rotation and McHugh in the pen. Peacock seems to be a rhythm guy. Sometimes it takes him a minute to get it going. You have more rope as a starter, and as a reliever not coming out of the gate firing can be a problem. When he does get it going though he can roll for 6 innings.
does anyone ever pull that on an All Star caliber player? That kinda thing would all but guarantee he waits for free agency and bolts
Would you actually consider paying him anyway given how often he is injured and how inconsistent he has been? I'm not arguing for doing it as it probably wouldn't be a good look for our chances at other players down the road.
No, you can't pull it on any player on the ML roster. I can't believe he actually thinks it's possible. There's a reason Jurickson Profar (former #1 prospect in baseball) hit arbitration with 341 PAs at the ML level.
An injured player cannot be removed from the 25-man roster by being sent to the minors - his team must place him on the DL until he is healthy or the season ends. While they are on the disabled list, players may be sent, with their permission, on a rehabilitation assignment in the minor leagues. The length of these assignments is limited to a week or so, and players continue to be paid a Major League salary while they are on a rehabilitation assignment.
Seems like the most realistic way to improve the club is to move Reddick in a salary filler type trade for a SP. Greinke is the obvious one to watch. If they complete a Greinke trade and sign Cruz I think the team will be ready to go with almost zero holes. Springer Bregman Altuve Cruz Brantley Correa Tucker Gurriel Chirinos Verlander Cole Greinke McHugh James/Peacock/Valdez Stacked bullpen, Whitley to provide help later in the season. Would be great.
I like it. Just a few tweaks, but the roster would be the same for me: Springer Brantley Bregman Altuve Cruz Correa Tucker Gurriel Chirinos BN Kemp or Jake, Diaz, Stassi Not sure what to do about White. Verlander Cole Greinke McHugh James/Valdez/Whitley
LOL spoiled huh, they scored 797 runs. I guess you never suffered the dome days! Hell the 2005 NL champs team scored 693 that was tough to watch too. for reference league average last season was 721.
He forgot how to throw his slider for much of last season, for whatever reason. If he can fix that....
I'm fine rolling with this offense unless Realmuto becomes more reasonable. Don't want Nelson Cruz now. Would rather give White a chance to establish himself and there's no place for both. We can always add a bat in season if it becomes a real issue.
And yet his numbers were all pretty good, K rate went up actually, BB went down. People just remember that he wasn't single inning dominant. Better starter than reliever.
If we can add a 38 HR high contact bat for relatively cheap, do it. We would obviously have to make some tough decisions about whom to trade or demote, but I’m all for it. Trade Kemp, use White off the bench, demote Jake.
I expect some more trades. The Astros carried 12 position player most of 2018 (and 2017). The current roster with 13 position players looks like C Robinson Chirinos 1 Yuli Gurriel 2 Jose Altuve SS Carlos Correa 3 Alex Breman LF Kyle Tucker CF George Spring RF Josh Reddick DH Brantley IF/OF Aledmys Diaz IF White OF Jake Marisnick or Tony Kemp C Max Stassi To get 12 position players, both Marisnick and Kemp got to go. Looking at WRC+ for 2018 and Steamer 2019 for the OFs 2018/2019 124/119 Brantley 119/127 Springer 110/98 Kemp 102/105 Aledmys Diaz 99/109 Reddick 85/79 Marisnick 28/108 Tucker Brantley may get most of his starts at DH. Diaz viz-a-viz Marwin is probably more of an emergency LF. Kemp is really a 2B, but he has great value as a lead off hitter on a non-contending team or the 9th spot on a contender. I suspect that Hinch wants to keep Kemp and use him like he did last year (LF batting 9th). Tucker needs to be playing everyday, either in Houston or Round Rock. I suspect that the Astros will want Tucker to be their future RF, eventually replacing Reddick. If the Astros trade Reddick this offseason, the future is now and the starting OF would be Kemp-Springer-Tucker. Marisnick does not hit well enough to pinch hit but is a super solid late inning defensive replacement and pinch runner. Marisnick is also the only other OF besides Springer, who can play a respectful CF. All of this is likely not enough to earn a roster spot out of spring training. If Springer does get hurt, the Astros do have Miles Straw down on the farm to fill in.
