What do you think you have in the White House right now? The type of rhetoric and cult of personality is very similar to the President. They are two sides of the same coin.
AOC owns significant real estate inside of every Trumpers head for some crazy reason. I continue to believe that either they view her as a gigantic threat they need to neutralize or they all want to hate-you know what her. It’s about a failed masculinity type of thing. Whatever it is, she owns Central Park sized real estate inside you heads. Quite fascinating.
alternatively there's a kind of macabre fascination with watching a train wreck . . . it's like rubber-necking on a highway, everyone wants to do it but nobody admits to it
Of course. That’s why everyone loves dissecting every idiotic word out of Trumps mouth. The only difference is Trump has access to the nuclear codes. AOC’s power only extends as far as people give her in elevating her twitter feed to the nightly news. Something I’ve been critical of the left and the media in the past giving Trump in 2015/16. I’m only raising the question as to why there’s this need to raise her profile and give her more power beyond her one vote in Congress for bills that will never pass under this presidency. Do people really think it helps create false equivilency they can use for political warfare? Yes she has lied and exaggerated quite a bit. Like not exactly a feature in politics that has been worth covering from congressman and women in the past. Why her?
I think they are right to fear her, maybe they say she's a joke and think she's a joke but the fact is... A lot of her generation has the very same views as her. Regarding the corruption of government, money in politics, minimum wage, etc etc etc. That does make her a pretty big threat, not now...but 15-20 years from now? It'll be Millenials who will hold the power of government. All they've done is raise her profile. Back when this started, she had around 500k followers on twitter. She now has 1.5 million. For a member of congress, her popularity is insane. Conservatives are falling into the same trap Democrats did with Trump. 'He who exercises no forethought but makes light of his opponents is sure to be captured by them.' They are completely underestimating her ability to be persuasive, her charisma, and the fact that a lot of the policies she supports...a lot of people also support. People see the things she advocates for and goes "Huh? Doesn't sound so bad to me. She's said a few dumb things but I sure would like a higher wage." and all the GOP and Conservatives have done is give her a megaphone.
I saw an analysis the other day that said she already has double the twitter followers of ALL the other incoming House freshmen combined--the author plausibly argued this reflects her position as the single most important new House member this session. Combined with the DNC chair's assertion that she is the "future of the Democratic party." And honestly, she really does serve as a poster child of the perceived far-left takeover of the Democratic party. I'm not sure why people think she should be flying under the radar.
It shouldn't be surprising why people on the right love AOC, she's fun to laugh at because she's foolish enough to say what she actually believes which is just over the top ridiculous. On top of just comedy, it allows those on the right to say things that would be seen as strawmanning if not for AOC running her mouth and actually saying those things. She's pretty much the best possible gift to the right, basically like if Trump and Sarah Palin had a child.
THIS. ^^^ The sheer irony of AOC pointing out fraud and waste in government only to in the same breath argue for more government interaction in our lives is breathtaking.
Can you give examples of her "lying"? I think you are untruthful on this. Also any proof of the exaggerating quite a bit beyond" which to be meaningful should mean beyond that of a normal politician? Are you just inculcating the Right's spin?
Uhhh no. I say that in regards to a Wapo fact check I saw the other day. I believe she misstated pretty inaccurately the defense budget among other things. Yeah... it’s a fact that she has mistated facts like every politician has done at some point in time. Most people think nothing of it though and often on the right it’s a celebration of falsehoods. Even then... her point was spot on regardless. We spend a sh$& ton on defense and don’t spend jack in these other areas. It’s a shame there was a misstatement there that allows for a diversion from her point. In the era of Trump, there is no equivilency. Certainly not AOC by far. But there’s nothing wrong with stating when and how she and other Dems I agree with mistate facts when they do.
She actually got into a pretty difficult school through her own academic merit unlike Trump. I'm sure she understands the difference between basic concepts like life and health insurance . She's much more knowledgeable and willing to read than Trump. She's a populist though and populists often say, tweet very idealistic ideas which can only come from someone as inexperienced as AOC Her problem isn't being dumb like Trump. Her problem is niaveness because she's in her god damn twenties with little work experience.
Look, having nuclear – my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at M.I.T.;good genes, very good genes, O.K., very smart, the Wharton School of finance, very good, very smart –you know, if you're a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, O.K., if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people any where in the world – it’s true! – but when you're a conservative Republican they try – oh, they do a number – that’s why I always start off: "Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune” – you know I have to give my life credentials all the time, because we're a little disadvantaged – but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me—it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are (nuclear is powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right—who would have thought?), but when you look at what's going on with the four prisoners—now it used to be three, now it’s four—but when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years—but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us.
Since there are comparison between AOC and Trump.... They aren't two sides of the same coin. The only similarity I have seen, and it's a bit of a stretch one, is the temptation and actual delivery of untruth, half truth, hyperbole. One of them do it at a much more intense and regular level, and knowingly lie repeatedly. A big distinction is one of them is all about the me ideology while the other is about an ideology outside of her. Dear leader vs democratic socialism. While you may not agree with the ideology, one is trying to do good for others, while the other only care about doing good for self.
