Holy crap. Can someone post the whole article? From the preview it would of been Bukauskas and 2 other prospects for 3 1/2 months of Harper. Would of been interesting to say the least
For Harper, the Nationals would have obtained right-hander J.B. Bukauskas, the Astros’ No. 8 prospect according to MLBPipeline.com, and two other minor leaguers, sources said. Catcher Garrett Stubbs, the team’s No. 15 prospect, was in play, and the Nationals would have received another, low-level, minor-league pitcher as well. After learning they could not land Harper, the Astros put together another trade that would have sent right-hander Francis Martes to the Chicago White Sox for outfielder Avisaíl García, sources said. That deal failed to come to fruition when the Astros expressed concern over the condition of García’s right knee. The Astros, according to sources, also pursued another right-handed hitter in the days before the non-waiver deadline, believed to be St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Tommy Pham. But that trade, if it indeed was discussed, also failed to materialize
why would Washington reject that deal? They knew they were losing Harper after this year (or they could've resigned him anyways), they were out of the race by end of July and kept him for sentimentality? Basically free prospects for a dead year anyways...
If the Astros were okay with the risk of possibly losing Bryce for nothing, what would stop the Astros for going after Bryce in Free Agency anyway? Money? Luhnow did say he would increase the payroll if need be. Worry about locking your core in later if you're worried about winning now.
YES! Possibility of handing out the largest contract in history? I'd say that "would stop the Astros from going after Bryce..." Realistically we could've had him as a rental to help with a WS push (probably would've helped!) -- I'm slightly miffed why Washington doesn't do that deal. Holding on to him begat them nothing...
Yes, I agree it may cost a few games, and in terms of Expected Value (which is all I'm thinking about), I'm saying you probably have a slightly lower EV in the next couple of years, slightly higher in the outer years. Netting out roughly even. But yes, as with any decision, the choice you don't make could vary to the positive, and the choice you do make could vary negative. It's probability More importantly, I assume we'd use that money on other resources now to be able to keep the Expected Value close while improving it via other routes
Bryce is 26 and will likely want an opt-out in his next contract. Especially if he rakes, which he will. Also, Bryce was open to playing first base earlier this year. "Harper fielded grounders and took instructions from first-base coach Tim Bogar on the field at Nationals Park hours before their game Monday against the Red Sox. In fact, Harper has been telling manager Dave Martinez lately that he wanted to play first base." https://www.mlb.com/news/bryce-harper-open-to-playing-first-base/c-283943956 Imagine an infield of Bregman, Correa, Altuve, and Harper.
I have been saying it they have bee. Looking for a Power Bat for two years. Do not count out the Astros on anything. A Surprise something. What ever they do will shock the league. I think the Astros will shock them more then once
Astros would have acquired Harper for end of season and playoffs only so they would not have lost him for nothing.
I really dont think we can compete with other teams for Harper or Machado. But Paul Goldschmidt could be a big target. Also Yasmani Grandal or a trade of J.T. Realmuto. But I wonder if they could pull a Tommy Pham???? I could see a OFer being targeted. Micheal Brantley???
I have been on the Grienke Goldshmidt trade from the jump as long as the Diamond backs pay between 30 and 40 m of Grienkes contract. I would try and unload a contract that way maybe Reddick. And then the prospects
I also believe Paxton would be an overpay for us since we are In the same division. Love to have him though. I see Kluber just think Carrasco would be easier to obtain
This would be the offseason that I could see happening. A stretch in some but could happen. 3 trades: A. Josh Reddick, Joe Smith, Tyler White prospects J.B. Bukauskas, Cional Perez, Dean Deetz and a Lotto ticket Prospect To the Diamondbacks for Zach Grienke and Paul Goldschmidt Diamondbacks pay 10m on each of the remaining years of Grienkes contract 30m total. B. Tony Kemp, Yordan Alveraz, Framber Valdez, Freudis Nova and Jeremy Pena For who ever excerpts it for James Paxton, Carlos Carrasco, Noah Syndergaard or Cory Kluber C. Look into Avasail Garcia or Tommy Pham. Offer up Chris Devenski, Brad Peacock and Francis Martes.
