So after the first preseason game a couple of the rule changes stood out to me: the "freedom of movement" thing and resetting the clock to 14 seconds instead of 24 off of an offensive rebound. (I realize that "freedom of movement" is not new but rather something that is being emphasized in more ways than it has been previously.) Ackerman said that MDA told him that the team isn't worried about the resetting the clock rule change since Rockets try to score early in the shot clock anyway. I would agree with MDA that this rule change won't impact us too much. However, I suspect that the new emphasis on freedom of movement might disproportionately favor teams who have a lot of player movement on offense - and therefore have a relative negative impact on teams whose offense does not feature a lot of player movement, like ours. It will be much harder to stick on a guy who is running around in halfcourt sets and going through screens if any sort of contact from a defensive player will be called a foul. The obvious winner from this rule change is GSW, and since we are really the only team trying to compete with GSW that sucks for us. Of course, it's not uncommon for the NBA/refs to go crazy about a new rule in preseason and early on in the season, then abandon it towards the end of the season. So maybe that's what we'll have here. I certainly hope so. CF, what do you think about this newfound emphasis on "freedom of movement"? Do you think it will be a net positive, negative, or neutral for the Rockets?
Just another foul that the refs can subjectively apply and not apply at any time. Warriors best off season pick up is any new rule that may be difficult to apply.
Random enforcement coming. With true freedom of movement Capela should be able to dominate inside but I bet it’s only freedom of movement for the little guys (and the team the nba wants to win)
it's terrible for guys like PJ tucker/Ennis. will have a huge impact on how good a team can be defensively
It totally slows down the game and made it tough to watch. Seems like if you sneeze on a guy's jersey they blow the whistle. Perhaps the players adjust but not sure why the NBA wanted this rule to go into effect.
This is the “protect Curry” rule. It won’t last more than a week. ESPN and TNT will call Silver as soon as the 10th foul happens in the first half. This will slow down games
nba conspiracy fwiw: that video was last year prior to the playoffs. The Dish has the new one, with more examples. Here's the official new 2018-19 PoE, provided by some dude from the Willy Wonka factory @marky :)
Wait for the time Harden in ISO blows by Curry for a viscious dunk, but it's called back due to Curry impeding Harden's "Freedom of Movement", despite it not making a diff to Harden. Foul on the floor...no dunk, no FTs.
just another tool for a crooked WWE league to employ when necessary, at league-mandated designated times of their choosing. such as a WCF game seven for instance
I'm no detective but it looks like he is watching Willy Wonka on one of the replay monitors at the bottom. Guy definitely works at Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory.
I expect a call or two regularly against Harden for locking the defender's arm underneath his when driving to the basket.
If actually called against the Warriors, this rule could be devastating to them. My hunch is, the NBA won't call it on them, like at all, but teams playing against them will be hit hard. The warriors are the worst of the bunch with their illegal screens and grabs, and now with even more stars expect the star calls and cheap fouls to carry them heavily.
This sounds like it would be a BS TSA regulation called the “Freedom of Movement Act” where they would make you scan and email them a picture of your ID 6 hours before a flight or something
Pretty much this. The rule helps the Warriors move around. It directly hurts teams trying to defend players coming off screens. Meanwhile, radio silence on MOVING SCREENS that help the Warriors. Just NBA doing typical NBA things.
very suspect that this is a point of emphasis after how well the Rockets defended GS and all their off-ball movement there was no outcry from fans about freedom of movement fouls I bet this new rule won’t apply to the likes of Draymond
why every year is there some point of emphasis that always hurst instead of helps us? it either helps a team defend us or keeps us from properly defending. they scared
It's an embarrassment. I think the league is so happy with all the scoring that it doesn't want to enforce stuff like that.
