Yeah... I think the reality is that he'd have been even worse, all season. Because as he's noted, he wants the ball in his hand at times. At least with Ryno, he was willing to just stand and wait for a pass to try and spread the floor. That didn't happen this past season for whatever reason (are we ever going to figure out wtf happened to him), but at least when it didn't happen, he went to the bench and the team moved on. You'd effectively be forced to play with Melo... and that's a problem. Consider, by game, the team's overall +/- vs. Melos: Game 1: Team +8, Melo +1 (7 worse) Game 2: Team -7, Melo +4 (11 better) Game 3: Team -13, Melo -20 (8 worse) Game 4: Team -17, Melo -18 (1 worse) Game 5: Team +8, Melo -6 (14 worse) Game 6: Team -5, Melo -19 (14 worse) OKC was -26 for the series. Melo was -58, and the team was worse with him on the floor in 5 of the 6 games.
Entire offseason? We got him before the draft! Obviously the connection went deep and had been going on for a lot longer than we were aware.
No we didn't. He was traded here on June 28th, two days before free agency. We had been linked to him since the season ended. He was listed as our primary target in both the national media by guys like Woj, here by insiders like Cyber AND on our podcasts with Clutch.
I don't get the need to act like Morey surprises us with who he targets. He doesn't. He targets great players and he goes after them hard.
Melo is not going to "opt out" in OKC. This is pretty much what I expect to happen with the Melo situation. The MLE almost makes up the off-set on the buy out and he gets to pick his team, the best situation for him. Would be best for OKC too since they can't trade him (NTC) and they save some money and help team chemistry.
That may be what happens. I have no idea really I just find his comments to be interesting. I don't want Melo unless it means Lebron.
Hey, not knocking OKC, just suggesting that short of one of the absolute NBA 'destination', so-called by the 'they-said'ers, NYK, LAL, GSW (not Nets, not Klips), if Westbrook were in Houston instead of Harden, or NOLA instead of AD, etc etc et alia, I think 'any other pastures' wins in a landslide. And that's a shame (speaking Rox-fan dispassionately for the nonce) as he is joyous to watch, like a highlight reel is. But, yea-yea-yea SammieP bequesthed 'us' The Beard instead!
He is trash and will bring the team down. Stay away from this has been and he was never great to begin with. Never understood Morey's infatuation with this guy. You can't play him against Warriors or most teams for that matter. His defense is non existent and now it seems his offense is missing most of the time too, which is just limited to jacking up ill advised shots.
So if this happens. Say the buyout is $20M. Any team picks him up for $8M. Is OKC only on the hook for $12M (cap hit)?
He’s better than over half the league..... still. The hate is real......just thinking he would want to come to Houston to just rock the boat is stupid.Chris Paul is a legit floor general and respected by Bron and Melo. They would listen and work to get this right.these are grown men, not teenagers. If you don’t like him, fine but don’t act like the guy doesn’t ball out when he has talent around him. I don’t hear anyone saying anything about his Team USA appearances. He never wanted to be in OKC anyway....
perfect example of someone who did not watch melo at all for the last 2 seasons especially this one that just finished. And its obvious. referencing team usa as if he's still that type of player. that measn nothing at this point. said it before, and I guess and it needs to be said again. please catch up to present day 2018. hes 34 not 24. You know what's really stupid is thinking he can just flip the switch by being on a different team.
No, that's not the way it works. Here's the explanation: If another team signs a player who has cleared waivers, the player's original team is allowed to reduce the amount of money it still owes the player (and lower their team salary2) by a commensurate amount. This is called the right of set-off. This is true if the player signs with any professional team -- it does not have to be an NBA team. The amount the original team gets to set off is limited to one-half the difference between the player's new salary and the minimum salary for a one-year veteran during the season in which the player is waived (if the player is a rookie, then the rookie minimum is used instead). For example, suppose a fifth-year player is waived with one guaranteed season remaining on his contract for $5 million. If this player signs a $2 million contract with another team for the 2017-18 season, his original team gets to set off $2 million minus $1,312,611 (the minimum salary for a one-year veteran in 2017-18), divided by two, or $343,694. The team is still responsible for paying $4,656,306 of the original $5 million. Note that between his prior team and new team the player will earn a combined $6,656,306, which was more than he earned prior to being waived. http://www.cbafaq.com/salarycap.htm#Q65 The player who was waived/bought out actually gets to double dip on almost 50% of the difference (minus the vet minimum)
Knowing Melo, he'll try to negotiate buyout in summer but will not give up a single penny, so it drags into season, he finally decides to give up a little and OKC says okay because he is awful, then his agent calls Lakers where Lebron is and is like, ok, ready to start at SF for you guys and get that chip! But it gets super awkward when Lakers "go in another direction" and decide to pass in favor of signing Dwyane Wade, then Melo will sign with the Clippers and claim that's what he wanted all along.
People still in here overrating Melo after the season he just had? A lot of y’all are so enamored with high volume scoring on garbage efficiency. Melo then combines that with atrocious defense.
