Frank Vogel was about as pedestrian a hire as the Magic could have made. Two years is what I expected. He just isn't head coach material. He'll have a long career as a defensive assistant. Might get another shot down the line. The important question is will they do any better this time. IMO, they should hire an assistant that has never been a head coach instead of an obvious, below average retread.
They tried that with Jacque Vaughn and it didn't really work. Their most successful year post-Dwight came under Scott Skiles, and after a year he decided he couldn't deal with Hennigan's incompetence. Coaching hasn't been the issue in Orlando.
Coaching hasn't been the issue? Seriously? I guess you could argue it hasn't been the ONLY issue. Scott Skiles was one of the most toxic coaches the NBA has seen in a while. Another example of the Magic hiring a retread nobody else was even considering (for obvious reasons). Just because they struck out with Jacque Vaughn doesn't mean they shouldn't go the same route again. Considering the recent state of their franchise, they definitely aren't the most coveted team to coach. Their only hope to get someone above average is to find a nugget below the radar. Shame on them if they hire another desperate retread. Maybe they should look at the college ranks.
Yep, personally i still think he's a good coach, he did a great job with the Pacers few years ago, the Magic well, they suck.
Maybe coaching just doesn't matter in the NBA. Step Curry is hurt the warriors don't look good. Other than brad stephens and pop I don't think coaches really matters.
Coaching matters, Mark Jackson had DGreen on the bench and same crew only won 50 games one time. But players matter more.
Rockets staff just won COY last year and killed it this year -- wouldn't want to mess with that at all
Coaching matters but players matter more. The most important actually is the GM since he is the one who picks both. Morey for example will always give you a team that is good enough to get in the playoffs every year even if the coach is a joke like McFail or the roster's best player is Luis Scola.
The warriors where trending up. Jackson did start green in the playoffs where he played well. They lost in 7 to the clips and it was a close series. They did underachieve and you can blame Jackson for that. They had the 4th best srs in the league but they only won 51 games. The clips had 2nd best srs so it was no shame in losing to them. I also think bogut was hurt. Also Alvin Gentry was the one who put in their offense which borrows on MDA s offense. Kerr had no coaching experience. Walton and brown seemed to do fine coaching the warriors. If ty lue can win a ring I think coaching just doesn't matter that much.
Only 50 games? That team was atrocious before Mark Jackson got there. Orlando would be throwing parades if they won 50 games next year
How exactly did they under achieve? If they improved every season since Jackson got there, wouldn't that make his tenure there a success?
