Ok... I know I'm getting old... but...

Today I wanted to take my wife to a decent restaurant for lunch (nothing fancy, but not Burger King). I search Yelp for the two-dollar-sign $$ restaurants (not the expensive $$$ or $$$$ restaurants...

...And all the search results are restaurants that are charging $22 for a chicken breast, $16 for a burger.

    WTF?!?!?

Are people really paying that much (and more!) at common restaurants?!?!

Do any of you also find restaurant prices to be VERY over-inflated?

Yes we are paying that much. But you can't really complain given the proportions

Go to NYC or SF and then you'll know how good we have it.

Prices in Austin aren't that better than la.

Houston is decent in the sense of finding cheap spots but I agree the portions are better.

Not really. And I don't get the impression that most restaurant owners are raking in cash, flying around in helicopters like Joel Osteen either.

How much did you expect to pay, it is 2018 and not 1998. There has been inflation.

If you want to go to a cheap sit down restaurant, then go somewhere like Ruby Tuesday's or somewhere like that. You will regret it though, the food quality is on par with Burger King.

I can't go to regular chains anymore. It's all about steakhouses and stuff when I take someone out on a date; I feel like I need better food haha. These are some of my last bills (including tip)

    • The Federal Grille: $245
    • Ruth's Chris: $180
    • The Capital Grille: $280
    • Maggiano's: $134
    • Del Frisco's: $336
    • Morton's: $180

And I'm not one that eats out every weekend.

The appetizers are going to be $15 or more per person

The entrees are around $50 each

    Sides are about $10

Drinks are a little high for a chain restaurant.

I bet they use fancy lingo to describe the menu items and don't put dollar signs in front of the cost.

You're getting old? I hope you're not on some fixed pension plan.

Try searching Yelp for one-dollar-sign $ restaurants.

And avoid movie theaters, those are kind of pricey too now.

The trick is to find the places where the staff eats. I always ask waiters where they go out to drink too. They know value better than anyone.

You wanna eat for 2? That's $50 easy.

You want a good meal for 2? That's a hundy plus.

You want a really good meal for 2? That's tree-fiddy.

This is not a new development.

This. The waiters are paid chit, the cooks even less, and most owners go bankrupt in the first year of operation.

But yeah we don't go out "for real" often. Maybe once every 2 or 3 months. Otherwise it's some lame place + coupon / gift card or eating at home. Eating out good food is expensive. Even eating out mediocre food is too pricey.

    You disappoint me.

I was expecting Red Lobster and/or Applebee's when I clicked that spoiler.

For whatever reason, my 93 year old grandmother LOVES the Helper Stroganoff. I can make it from scratch, nope, I've tried, she likes the box better.

We're high class and therefore too good for Applebee's. Has to be TGI Friday's or above.

Ftr we had tuna helper and Pillsbury crescent roles for dinner last night. Meal for 3.1 for about $7? Can't beat that.
