Remember those Derek Carr for MVP projections? Because "any ol' coach will do", right? Now all of a sudden Jack Del Rio is on the hot seat and their media is what iffing.
LZ is pretty much convinced O'Brien is gone. It almost seems like with him leaving Savage in there and his comments on the interview with Gruden Monday night is that he wants to get fired.
He said when they made the decision to go with Watson he looked at film of what Harbaugh did with Kapernick with the 49ers and what Shanahan did with RG3 in Washington as well as things Watson did well at Clemson to design an offense that used a lot of run/pass options for Watson. The irony is Watson goes down and the 2 guys he used to model his offense for Watson are available and the Texans made no effort to sign either one.
He did all of that at halftime...? Or the story was true he wanted to start Watson from the beginning and Smith talked him out of it.
Missed my point... O'Brien changed to Watson at halftime of game 1, so he either did all of that you listed in 20 minutes or he had already planned to bring Watson in and had those packages installed.
I can see it going either way but my gut says that he will be back for the last year of his contract. After all the sheer number of injuries gives BoB a built-in excuse and to be realistic, this season really didn't start with high expectations for the Texans anyway.
Next year is the last year of his contract and if you don't feel he is your guy going forward why keep him. If you think he is your guy give him an extension.
I think it's still up in the air. His first 3 years were slightly above average, due in large part to not having much of an opportunity to obtain a legit starting QB. This season we've seen him at his best, when he's allowed to be creative because he finally has a franchise QB who's capable of making plays. And we've see the team at its worst, hampered by injuries on both sides of the ball, missing 2 of the top defenders, the new star QB, and dealing with the worst OL in the league. O'Brien certainly has his faults, but I think we've seen what this team could potentially be with Watson at QB for a whole season, We probably win the division again this year if Watson doesn't get hurt. I think they'll give O'Brien next year to see what the team can do if it stays healthy.
No reason BOB should be fired for this season. He's missing his starting QB, 2 of his 3 best defensive players, and has had a litany of other injuries. No reason to extend him either, but him and Watson seemed to be building something special. It's frankly stupid to assume the head coach and playcaller had no role in how well Watson was performing. Watson will be good with anybody, but you could make a good case that he was the best QB in the NFL in the games prior to the injury, it was unreal. I don't wanna mess with that right now. But BOB's soft playcalling late can't be ignored. Not ready to fire, but not gonna give a ringing endorsement either.
I can see this, but I’d add in one caveat. He has to bring in an actual OC and BOB HAS to focus on solely being the head coach. That way, he can make the coaching improvements he says he needs to make weekly.
So let's play this out... if LZ is right and he's gone at the end of the season, who replaces him? MY VOTES: 1) Jim Bob Cooter 2) Edgar Bennett
Lame duck implies dead man walking. Depending on how next season plays out he could easily be our coach for the foreseeable future. If we get a full year of what we saw this year with Watson, and he allows Watson to actually win the games (instead of running on 3rd and 4) it could be special. If he fails then it could be a while before he gets another HC job in the NFL (or he goes back to college). If it succeeds, then he isn't gonna want to be separated from Watson (now he knows getting good QB play isn't easy, regardless of how good you think you are) and this rich ass organization isn't gonna let him go.
Prediction: The Texans don't fire BOB. The team wins 10+ games next year and everyone rushes to convince themselves BOB is a genius after all. Soon after Watson's lack of development becomes apparent, age and injury take a final and conclusive toll on the defense, and the team slides back into the third tier toilet of the AFC with the other also-rans.
